- Eine Veranstaltung mit dem apabiz berlin
Der im Jahre 2000 ausgerufene "Aufstand der Anstaendigen" gegen den
Neonazismus ist ohne nachhaltige Wirkung verpufft, nach wie vor praegen
Neonazis das Alltagsbild in vielen Stadtteilen, Orten oder ganzen
Regionen. "Rechtsrock" ist ihr Integrationsmittel und Ideologietraeger,
das Geschaeft läuft und die Hilflosigkeit der sogenannten
"Zivilgesellschaft" hält an. Der Skinhead verkommt dabei immer mehr zum
Klischeebild. Neonazistische Hatecore-Fans mit Piercings und
Spitzbärten, Rechtsrock-Girlies mit bunten Haarsträhnen, "Freie
Kameradschaften", die unter schwarzen Fahnen marschieren: Sie alle eint
der identitaetsstiftende Begriff der "Nationalen Jugend".Die
neonazistischen Organisationen und Netzwerke können sich darin nach
Belieben bedienen. Diese Differenzierungsprozesse und die dadurch
freigesetzte "neue" Bewegungsdynamik stellt AntifaschistInnen in
Deutschland vor neue Fragen und Herausforderungen. Diese sollen auf
dieser Veranstaltung vorgestellt und diskutiert werden.

Daß viele Juden zwar allgemein am Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus
teilgenommen hatten, sich die jüdischen Volksgruppen und ihre führenden
Köpfe jedoch ohne große Gegenwehr vernichten ließen, war lange Zeit
vorherrschende Meinung. Der Aufstand des Warschauer Ghettos erscheint
hierbei als Ausnahme, welche die Regel bestätigt. Doch der jüdische
Widerstand war wesentlich größer als bisher angenommen. Obwohl viele der
Aktionen mit dem Tod der Anführer und Augenzeugen in Vergessenheit gerieten
oder die Dokumente darüber noch immer unbearbeitet in den Archiven liegen,
möchte die Ausstellung anhand von Photographien und Augenzeugenberichten
zumindest die unterschiedlichen Formen des Widerstandes aufzeigen.

Keine Plattform fuer Homophobie!
Immer wieder tauchen Homophobie und Sexismus in verschiedenen
Musikstroemungen auf, doch selten wird dies auch zum Thema gemacht. Geht
es nur darum sich zu amuesieren und es interessiert nicht, welche
Botschaften dabei transportiert werden? Ist es ok bei schwerst
homophoben und sexistischen Texten froehlich abzutanzen, braucht es das
gar zum Vergnuegen? Wir finden nicht!
Wenn Subkultur zum Mainstream wird
Subkultur ist was tolles - ein eigener Lebensstil, eigener Sound, eigene
Sprache und natuerlich nicht zu vergessen die Community - gemeinsam
unterscheidet man sich von den anderen, vor allem von der restlichen
Gesellschaft, meist repraesentiert von den eigenen Eltern - aber ist dem
wirklich so? Gerade wenn man Teile der Ragga Szene betrachtet, glaubt
man bei einer Audienz von Weihbischof Krenn gelandet zu sein - klar
redet der anders - aber gegen Schwule hat er allemal was. "ICH ERDULDE
IHRE TATEN ABER SIE SIND UNNORMAL DAS MUESSEN SIE ERDULDEN DENN SIE
BEREICHERN DIE WELT NICHT MIT KINDERN SIE HABEN AUSGEFALLENEN SEX
UNNORMALEN SEX" - na Leute von wem ist dieser Spruch von
Obermoralaposteln wie Krenn, Schoenborn, Khol (OeVP)? Weit gefehlt,
dieser Spruch stammt von einem alternden-moechtegern-Oberguru der
hiesigen Ragga Szene namens "Kodak". Er und seine diversen Juenger
betreiben offen Homophobie - so wird schon mal auf einem Party-Flyer
Schwulen und Lesben klargemacht, dass sie fernbleiben sollen.
Wer sich Herrn Kodaks Forum anschaut, kann dort haufenweise homophobe
Sprueche finden - nicht nur er sondern auch einzelne Anhaenger hetzen,
dabei ist alles zu finden von der Aufforderung Lesben zu skalpieren und
"hoeher zu haengen", Schwule zu verbrennen, bis zu Assoziationen wie
"Schwule=Kinderficker". Herr Kodak und Konsorten wuerden sich sicher
bestens mit dem Herrn Khol der OeVP - der jahrelang gegen die Aufhebung
des Diskriminierungsparagraphen 209 gekaempft hat - verstehen, vertreten
sie doch gemeinsame Interessen. Oesterreichischer Mainstream at it"s
worst, nix is mit Subkultur - da wird im Takt der Schwarz-Blauen
Regierung und Co. abgetanzt.
Hat Sound eine Botschaft?
Viele meinen es ist eh egal welche Texte mit einem Sound daherkommen.
"Es hoert eh keiner drauf", "es geht ja eh nur um den Spass", "der meint
es ja eh nicht so" - von "dissen" und "posen" ist da immer wieder die
Rede. Doch Sound transportiert sehr wohl eine Botschaft. Wenn dem nicht
so waere, koennte niemand gedisst werden, in dem man ihn als schwul
bezeichnet - das funktioniert nur, wenn diese Zuschreibung tatsaechlich
als Beleidigung interpretiert wird. Mit Spruechen wie "Schwule
erschiessen" sein (Szene)Image aufzuwerten, geht nur, wenn die Botschaft
bei den ZuhoererInnen auf Zustimmung trifft. Und dass sich Musik bestens
zur Hetze benutzen laesst, haben auch andere begriffen: So gehoert es zu
den fixen Strategien der Neo-Nazi Szene, in diversen Subkultur-Szenen -
und dies durchaus mit Erfolg - auf musikalischen Propagandafeldzug zu
gehen. Und gerade weil eben Musik so gut zur Propaganda taugt, ist es
wichtig gegen solche Tendenzen aufzutreten, dagegen, dass Hass gegen
Schwule und Lesben - und nicht zu vergessen die Degradierung von Frauen
zu reinen Objekten, die nur der maennlichen Befriedigung dienen - zum
Teil eines "alternativen" Lifestyles werden.
Der Background
Homophobie in Jamaica ist leider nicht vom Rastafari-Movement zu
trennen. Im Gegenteil sogar: Die wesentlichen Musiker der Insel, die uns
so einflussreiche Stile beschert haben wie Ska, Reggae, Dub, Dancehall
hatten und haben als bekennende Rastas einen wesentlichen Anteil am
"queer bashing". Anfang der 90er schaffte Buju Banton es mit "Boom Bye
Bye" unter anderem mit den Zeilen: "Batty boy get up and run ah gunshot
in ah head man" ganz nach oben in die Verkaufscharts. Im Maerz 2001 war
T.O.K. acht Wochen lang die Nummer 1 der World Reggae Charts mit "Chi
Chi Man". Die Jamaican Labour Party machte den Reggae-Song mit den
brennenden Schwulen im Refrain sogar zur Wahlhymne.
In dem von vielen so verehrten Jamaika ist homosexueller
Geschlechtsverkehr ein Verbrechen. Analverkehr wird mit bis zu 10 Jahren
Gefangenschaft mit harter Arbeit bestraft. Treffen kann das jeden, denn
definiert wird das von jedem Polizisten selbst. So mancher landete in
der Vergangenheit schon im Gefaengnis fuer Haendchenhalten, beschuldigt
wegen grob unsittlichen Verhaltens. Wer "batty boy" oder "chi chi man"
genannt wird, muss mit dem Schlimmsten rechnen.
Diese Ideologie wird von einigen eins zu eins uebernommen bzw.
reproduziert, es wird zur Schande wenn man(n) zu wenig "orginal" ist:
"bun chi chi man - ALLE GROELEN MIT ABER WER TRAUT SICH ECHT AUS EINEM
METER EINE GUN AUF EINEN chi chi ZU HALTEN UND IHN ZU TOETEN UND DANN
COOL DEN DRECK WEGZUPUTZEN ... WOHL KEINER DEN ICH HIER KENN." (zitat
kodak) - ein Wettkampf wer "cooler" ist!
Keine Plattform und Toleranz ...
... fuer homophobe Hetzer! Wer solchen Leuten wie Kodak eine Gelegenheit
bietet homophobe und sexistische Hetze zu betreiben, beteiligt sich
selbst daran. Wenn Veranstaltungsorte wie das Subzero mit einer larifari
"Stellungnahme" erklaeren, dass sie zwar eh gegen Homophobie sind, aber
Kodak und Co. eigentlich ganz liebe Menschen sind, die das ja alles gar
nicht so meinen, dann ist das eine massive Verharmlosung. Dass es auch
anders geht, haben die Arena und Radio Orange bewiesen, die Kodak einen
Tritt in den Arsch verpasst haben. Wir pfeifen auf Lippenbekenntnisse!

Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christentum und Sozialdemokratie fordert
Ausschluss von Blair aus der Sozialistischen Internationale
"Heute ist ein sehr trauriger Tag für die Menschheit", sagte
der Bundesvorsitzende der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christentum und
Sozialdemokratie (ACUS) Richard Schadauer
zum völkerrechtswidrigen Angriffskrieg der
USA, Großbritanniens und der mit ihnen verbündeten Staaten
auf die Menschen im Irak.
Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christentum und Sozialdemokratie
(ACUS) fordert von der österreichischen Bundesregierung eine klare
Stellungnahme gegen diesen Bruch des Völkerrechts. Die
ACUS unterstützt die Forderung der Sozialistischen Jugend nach
einem Einreiseverbot für die führenden PolitikerInnen aus den
diesen Angriffskrieg führenden Staaten: "Österreich soll aus
Protest alle BotschafterInnen aus diesen Ländern
zurückberufen."
Die ACUS - eine Plattform engagierter Christinnen und
Christen in der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie - fordert
von der Sozialistischen Internationale den Vorsitzenden
der Labor Party Tony Blair auszuschließen:
"Die internationale Sozialdemokratie kann nur eine
Friedensbewegung sein. Daher schließen sich jene,
die Krieg führen, aus der Sozialistischen Internationale
eigentlich selber aus", stellte ACUS-Bundesvorsitzender
Richard Schadauer fest.
Die ACUS unterstützt die heutigen Aktionen zum
"Tag X" (Demo in Wien 17.30 Uhr Stephansplatz)
sowie das Friedensgebet und die Demonstration
am Samstag, 22. März in Wien.
"Mit unserem Bundeskongress 'Politik machen mit der
Bergpredigt - Visionen von einer gerechten Welt'
vom 28. bis 30. März 2003 im Wiener Renner-Institut
werden wir ein klares Zeichen
gegen den Krieg und für den Frieden setzen",

Offener Brief der irakischen Opposition an die Menschen in Deutschland
Deutschland spricht vom Frieden. - Von unserem nicht. Seit 30 Jahren kennen
wir keinen Frieden. Wohl aber zwei Kriege mit Millionen Toten. Das Regime,
das wir bekämpfen, hat unsere Menschen mehrfach wie Insekten behandelt und
mit Giftgas besprüht. Über 4 Millionen Menschen ins Exil gezwungen. Hunderttausende
zwangsumgesiedelt und vertrieben. Allein in Irakisch Kurdistan zerstörte
Saddam Hussein 4000 Dörfer. 182 000 Menschen sind spurlos verschwunden. Der
unendlich andauernde, nie beendete Terror des Ba'th-Regimes richtete sich
nicht nur nach außen, sondern vor allem auch nach innen.
Die unabhängige französische Menschenrechtsorganisation "Alliance
Internationale pour la Justice" (AIJ) präsentiert die Liste jener
Verbrechen, die im Irak seit Saddams Machtergreifung begangen wurden: Eine
Million Tote, also 5 % der Bevölkerung, seien - kriegs- und
embargounabhängig - seit 1979 dem Regime zum Opfer gefallen. Weitere 1,5
Mio. Menschen wurden zwangsweise innerhalb des Landes "umgesiedelt". Nicht
zu vergessen die gewaltsame Trockenlegung der Marschgebiete des
Flüsse-Deltas im Süden, als eines der größten ökologischen Verbrechen
moderner Zeit. Dieser Terror ohne Ende findet tägliche Fortsetzung in der
Zwangsvertreibung der Kurden in den vom Regime kontrollierten Gebieten nahe
Kirkuk. In andauernden Militäroperationen gegen die Schiiten im Süden.
Gipfelte allein in den vergangenen drei Jahren in der Enthauptung von
mehreren hundert Frauen als angebliche "Prostituierte" und in den staatlich
verordneten chirurgischen Amputationen der Zungen sogenannter Staatsfeinde.
Alle diese Verbrechen wurden von Europa und in den Ländern des Westens
übersehen, geleugnet und überhört. Keine Friedensbewegung ging deshalb auf
die Straße. Nicht einmal als beweisbar wurde, daß deutsche Waffen und
Giftgastechnologie zu unserer Vernichtung geliefert worden waren, erhob sich
Protest. Keine Delegation von Kirchenleuten oder Politikern besuchte das
vernichtete Halabja. Unsere Opfer erfuhren bis auf diesen Tag keine
Rehabilitation, oder Entwicklungshilfe. Niemand unterstützte uns bei unserem
Kampf gegen die andauernde Diktatur. Gegen Krieg und Unterdrückung.
UNSER KAMPF FÜR DEMOKRATIE UND FRIEDEN
Aus eigener Kraft ergriffen die Menschen im Irak am Ende des zweiten
Golfkriegs 1991 die Chance und rebellierten gegen Saddam Hussein. In
vierzehn von achtzehn Provinzen des Irak befreiten wir uns. Erst als wir
keinerlei äußere Unterstützung erfuhren, konnte der Volksaufstand mit
brutaler Gewalt niedergeschlagen werden. Unter den Augen der damaligen
Anti-Irak Koalition, die erst die Iraker zum Aufstand aufforderte, sie dann
aber nicht unterstützte. Allein in Irakisch Kurdistan hatte die Freiheit
Bestand. Das Land konnte weitgehend wiederaufgebaut werden und die Menschen
konnten nun ohne Unterdrückung und Verfolgung leben. Jenseits der Diktatur
wurden Meinungsfreiheit, soziale Versorgung und Linderung der Not möglich.
Exemplarisch für den ganzen Irak wurde bewiesen: Entwicklung und friedliches
Zusammenleben sind möglich, sobald das Regime verschwunden ist.
VIELE REDEN VOM FRIEDEN - WIR MEINEN UNSEREN
Noch nie in unserer jüngeren Geschichte waren wir so einig in allen
grundlegenden Fragen, die den Irak und seine Zukunft betreffen. Kurden und
Schiiten, Assyrer und Kommunisten und sunnitische Oppositionelle haben sich
schon zu Beginn der 90er Jahre und vor kurzem erst in London auf ein Program
m zur Transformation des Irak verständigt. Das Zweistromland soll ein
demokratischer, föderaler und demilitarisierter Staat für alle seine
Bürgerinnen und Bürger werden. Ein multiethnisches Territorium für Araber,
Kurden, Assyrer, Turkmenen, Yeziden. Ein Land, in dem uneingeschränkt die
Menschenrechte gelten sollen, wo alle gleiche Staatsbürgerrechte haben, wo
jede Religion frei ausgeübt werden kann. Diese verbindliche Absicht auf
einen föderalen Staat im Nahen Osten ist neu und bietet einen Schlüssel zur
Neuordnung der Region. Nur Föderationen vermögen in Zukunft die
grundlegenden Probleme der Vielvölkerstaaten des Nahen Ostens auf eine
friedliche Perspetive für die Region dauerhaft zu lösen.
Seit längerem offerieren wir unsere Perspektiven und längst vorhandenen
Programme der Öffentlichkeit und der Regierung der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland. Wo sie Nichtbeachtung und Ignoranz erfahren. "Instabilität",
hören wir, sei die Folge unserer demokratischen Absichten. Als ob nicht
jede geschichtliche Erneuerung immer auch anfangs ein Element der
Instabilität hätte? Vom "Flächenbrand" ist die Rede. Als ob nicht gerade die
irakische Diktatur der Garant für die Flächenbrände der Vergangenheit
gewesen wäre? Der Irak würde in drei Teile gespalten, sagt man, dabei
fordert keine einzige der oppositionellen Gruppen eine Separation. Ganz im
Gegenteil erklären alle Irakis ihren ausdrücklichen Wunsch, in einem
gemeinsamen demokratischen Staat eine neue Assoziation freier Menschen zu
bilden. Weshalb in Deutschland diese Furcht vor der Freiheit im Irak?
Im Gegensatz zu namhaften Regierungen dieser Welt weigert sich die
Bundesregierung immer noch, uns als legitime Vertreter des Irak zu
empfangen. Gegen Wirtschaftsbeziehungen und Geschäfte mit den Repräsentanten
der Diktatur aber hat sie nichts. Haben wir die Region seit Jahren
destabilisiert, oder Saddam? Ist ihr VETO für den Frieden der Diktatur
vielleicht nur eines für ihr Öl?
PERSPEKTIVEN FÜR EINEN NEUEN DEMOKRATISCHEN IRAK
Das Regime Saddam Hussein hat den Beweis längst erbracht: es ist nicht
reformierbar. Die alleinige demokratische Perspektive ist der Sturz der
Diktatur. Weder Franzosen noch Deutsche haben dazu bisher auch nur einen
einzigen Vorschlag präsentiert. Diese Europäer hängen am Alten und
favorisieren passiv den status quo des Regimes. Aus ökonomischen Gründen
betreiben sie in Wahrheit die Rehabilitierung des Regimes. Auf unsere
Kosten - für ihre Geschäfte mit ihrem alten Kunden Saddam Hussein.
Eine solche Rehabilitierung des Ba'th-Regimes, - mit oder ohne Saddam
Hussein, - das ist ihre Moral, und nicht unsere. Die Menschen unseres Landes
warten voller Verlangen und Sehnsucht auf die Beseitigung der Unterdrückung.
Für die Menschen aller Nationen der Region, auch der in Israel und
Palästina, gäbe es bei einem Wiedererstarken des Regimes keine wirkliche
Hoffnung auf Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und eine menschliche Zukunft.
Wir legen heute unsere Pläne und Programme für einen neuen Irak aller Welt
offen vor. Die zugleich zum Schlüssel für eine demokratische Neuordnung des
gesamten Nahen Ostens werden könnten.
Wir appellieren an die Bundesregierung, die Medien und die Öffentlichkeit,
uns endlich als Partner wahrzunehmen und uns zu unterstützen. Wir erwarten
Hilfe bei unserem wichtigen Vorhaben. Das Zeichen setzen wir selber.
Unabhängig. Überzeugt. Vereint.
Der Einmischung anderer Länder der Region, insbesondere der Türkei, bedarf
es ausdrücklich nicht. Wir begrüßen alle Kräfte, die unsere Ziele und

SHOCK & REVULSION: World Movement Fights Back
Borrowing a page from the nightmare of the Vietnam War
when a U.S. commander explained that U.S. soldiers were
burning a peasant village in order to save it from
communism, the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal have decided to
burn Baghdad to save it from the current Iraqi Government.
The world is in a state of Shock and Revulsion as the
murderous Bush Administration follows through on its
promise to "Shock and Awe" the Iraqi people by dropping
thousands of bombs and missiles on their capital, a city
that is home to 4.5 million human beings.
This horrific unprovoked attack on a dense urban area must
be understood as one of the extreme terrorist acts of
modern times. Cruise missiles launched from submarines and
air craft hundreds of miles away and 3,000 lb. bombs
dropped from 30,000 ft. up are the latest example of the
Bush administration's criminal resort to limitless
violence and terrorism in order to achieve its objectives
of conquest and occupation. The hypocrisy of the war
against Iraq is extreme: the most powerful military in the
world waging first strike war with the most advanced
weapons against an impoverished country on the pretext
that it someday may possess such weapons.
The world has entered a new phase. The Bush Administration
is hell bent on world domination. The war on Iraq was
meant to signal that the U.S. use of raw military power
will be the means to create a new era of Empire. Iraq was
to be a stepping stone on this path of conquest.
To the shock of the warmakers, their plans have ignited a
world movement of opposition and solidarity. For months
this movement has delayed and restrained the war plans for
Iraq. Bush and Co. have lost all legitimacy and they are
isolated. The people's movement has deprived them of the
any threadbare claim to legality.
Today our hearts are today filled with both anger at the
war and sadness for the suffering people of Iraq who are
enduring this unprovoked terrorist attack. But sadness
and grief should be coupled with a profound understanding
that the sudden emergence of a new global movement offers
the best and only hope that the U.S. government's plans
for militarism, war and domination -- the doctrine of
endless war -- can and will be overcome.
In the days ahead we must intensify the struggle against
this cruel war. We urge everyone to stay in the streets,
and to organize against the lies and propaganda of the
death machine. Our movement has shown great energy and
strength in the last days. No part of the planet is free
from mass protests, including hundreds of cities inside
the United States. Now is the time to organize, organize
and organize.

Minute after minute the missiles came, with devastating shrieks

Saddam's main presidential palace, a great rampart of a building 20 storeys
high, simply exploded in front of me ­ a cauldron of fire, a 100ft sheet of
flame and a sound that had my ears singing for an hour after. The entire,
massively buttressed edifice shuddered under the impact. Then four more
cruise missiles came in.
It is the heaviest bombing Baghdad has suffered in more than 20 years of
war. All across the city last night, massive explosions shook the ground. To
my right, the Ministry of Armaments Procurement ­ a long colonnaded building
looking much like the façade of the Pentagon ­ coughed fire as five missiles
crashed into the concrete.
In an operation officially intended to create "shock and awe'', shock was
hardly the word for it. The few Iraqis in the streets around me ­ no friends
of Saddam I would suspect ­ cursed under their breath.
>From high-rise buildings, shops and homes came the thunder of crashing glass
as the shock waves swept across the Tigris river in both directions. Minute
after minute the missiles came in. Many Iraqis had watched ­ as I had ­
television film of those ominous B-52 bombers taking off from Britain only
six hours earlier. Like me, they had noted the time, added three hours for
Iraqi time in front of London and guessed that, at around 9pm, the terror
would begin. The B-52s, almost certainly firing from outside Iraqi airspace,
were dead on time.
Police cars drove at speed through the streets, their loudspeakers ordering
pedestrians to take shelter or hide under cover of tall buildings. Much good
did it do. Crouching next to a block of shops on the opposite side of the
river, I narrowly missed the shower of glass that came cascading down from
the upper windows as the shock waves slammed into them.
Along the streets a few Iraqis could be seen staring from balconies, shards
of broken glass around them. Each time one of the great golden bubbles of
fire burst across the city, they ducked inside before the blast wave reached
them. At one point, as I stood beneath the trees on the corniche, a wave of
cruise missiles passed low overhead, the shriek of their passage almost as
devastating as the explosions that were
to follow.
How, I ask myself, does one describe this outside the language of a military
report, the definition of the colour, the decibels of the explosions? When
the cruise missiles came in it sounded as if someone was ripping to pieces
huge curtains of silk in the sky and the blast waves became a kind of
frightening counterpoint to the flames.
There is something anarchic about all human beings, about their reaction to
violence. The Iraqis around me stood and watched, as I did, at huge tongues
of flame bursting from the upper stories of Saddam's palace, reaching high
into the sky. Strangely, the electricity grid continued to operate and
around us the traffic lights continued to move between red and green.
Billboards moved in the breeze of the shock waves and floodlights continued
to blaze on public buildings. Above us we could see the massive curtains of
smoke beginning to move over Baghdad, white from the explosions, black from
the burning targets.
How could one resist it? How could the Iraqis ever believe with their broken
technology, their debilitating 12 years of sanctions, that they could defeat
the computers of these missiles and of these aircraft? It was the same old
story: irresistible, unquestionable power.
Well yes, one could say, could one attack a more appropriate regime? But
that is not quite the point. For the message of last night's raid was the
same as that of Thursday's raid, that of all the raids in the hours to come:
that the United States must be obeyed. That the EU, UN, Nato ­ nothing ­
must stand in its way. Indeed can stand in its way.
No doubt this morning the Iraqi Minister of Information will address us all
again and insist that Iraq will prevail. We shall see. But many Iraqis are
now asking an obvious question: how many days? Not because they want the
Americans or the British in Baghdad, though they may profoundly wish it. But
because they want this violence to end: which, when you think of it, is
exactly why these raids took place.
Reports were coming in last night of civilians killed in the raids ­ which,
given the intensity of the cruise missile attacks, is not surprising.
Another target turned out to be the vast Rashid military barracks, perhaps
the largest in Iraq.
But the symbolic centre of this raid was clearly intended to be Saddam's
main palace, with its villas, fountains, porticos and gardens. And, sure
enough, the flames licking across the façade of the palace last night looked
very much like a funeral pyre.

The city of Baghdad, founded in 762 A.D. under the name Madinat
as-Salam - 'City of Peace' - is this day a lake of fire. The opening stage
of the Bush administration's "Shock and Awe" attack plan began as night fell
on Iraq, and lived terribly up to its terrible name. CBS news is reporting
that great swaths of residential neighborhoods within Baghdad have been
engulfed in flames. One can trust, perhaps, the ability of a cruise missile
to hit a bullseye from many miles away. One cannot be so precise in
predicting which way the resulting fires will blow.
In the great earthquake in San Francisco in 1906, people were not
killed so much by the shaking. They were killed by the firestorm that sucked
the air from their lungs and reduced them to ash before they could flee. So
it seems to be today in Baghdad.
Baghdad is a city of 5 million people, half of whom are under the age
of fifteen, most of whom are too poor to flee. Now, a great many of those
people are dead, burned in their homes and on their streets.
The American television media provided all of us with a Dresden-eye
view of the attack. Huge mushroom clouds bloomed from the streets as
buildings blazed and fell. The thunder of the explosions was so loud that
television speakers became distorted with the sound of the concussion. The
sky lit up as though the sun was rising. It was a fitting image, for a new
day in world history has dawned.
Much has been made of the precision of our vaunted arsenal of bombs and
missiles, as if they can go into a building and find the second door on the
left before they explode. The truth is far more dire. When a B-2 bomber
drops a 2,000 lb. JDAM munition, everyone and everything within a 120 meter
radius is instantly killed. Anyone within a 365 meter radius risks severe
shrapnel wounds. To be totally safe, one must be 1,000 meters away from the
epicenter of the explosion. Imagine how many homes can fit into 1,000
meters, and never mind the firestorm.
American Marines have died securing petroleum facilities, and in a
helicopter crash. If Iraqi forces do not surrender soon, American forces
will attack Baghdad from the ground. The loss of life among our people will
grow exponentially if a Stalingrad-style fight unfolds in Baghdad and
Tikrit. On Tom Brokaw's CBS News broadcast, the father of one of the
soldiers killed in the helicopter crash held a picture of his son to the
camera and shouted, "Take a look, Bush. You killed my only son."
Those who stand against this attack are dunned as "Not supporting the
troops." One might suggest the best way to support troops is to see them
brought home safely. One might also suggest that support continues after
the shooting stops. This does not appear to be on the agenda for the
Republican Party. A vote along party lines today in the House Budget
Committee slashed $9.7 billion from veterans disability compensation
programs, as well as from other programs. These cuts, pushed through the
committee by the majority-holding Republicans, are part of the plan to see
Bush's new $1.57 trillion tax cut through. Wave that flag, George.
Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld, when asked by a reporter whether the
Iraqi people would cheer Americans after this attack, stated that Baghdad's
civilians would welcome us. This defies known history in Japan and Germany
and Vietnam; those populations, after absorbing saturation bombing, hardened
their resistance. American television purported to show Iraqi civilians
cheering a soldier who tore down a picture of Hussein, but a Sky News
reporter walking Baghdad's streets reported that, to a man, everyone he
spoke with spat hatred and derision for this American attack.
On September 11th, I sat in numb horror as the images of carnage
unfolded before me on the television. On that day, I was the victim of
terrorism, along with every other American. Today, I sit in numbed horror
as more carnage unfolds. Hundreds of massive missiles have rained down on a
city far away, killing indiscriminately among the young, the infirm, the old
and the innocent. My government did this. My nation did this. My leaders
did this. Today, I am the terrorist.
So are you.
There is no justification for this attack. Saddam Hussein and his
forces had been effectively disarmed by the first Gulf War, by the UNSCOM
inspections, and by the more recent UNMOVIC inspections. According to
Hussein Kamel, son-in-law to Saddam Hussein whose comments to the UN in 1991
were recently reported in a buried Newsweek story, Iraq was pretty much
disarmed of mass destruction weapons even before the first war. The Bush
administration, in pushing for this war, has foisted lie after lie after lie
upon the American people and the world. The world didn't buy it, but they
weren't dependent upon lapdog media sources like ours for their data.
We are the terrorists now, stupid underinformed terrorists who dance to
the tune of a corporate media machine that will profit wildly from this
attack. NBC, MSNBC and CNBC are owned by General Electric, one of the
largest defense contractors on earth. They will be paid handsomely in
military contracts because of this, as they always have been. Yet GE gives
us the news we need to understand what is happening.
Americans are not often afforded the opportunity to witness a war crime
live on television. Today's actions bring to mind a war crime from a
generation ago: The shooting of a prisoner by Vietnamese General and
American ally Nguyen Ngoc Loan. General Loan put a pistol to the head of
this bound prisoner and blew his brains into the street, an image that
millions of Americans saw after it had taken place. We are here again
today. The poverty of the Iraqi people leaves them bound, unable to escape
the wave of steel. We have blown their brains out. We have incinerated
them in place. We will continue to do so, and you can watch it from your
couch. Today, you are the terrorist.
So am I.

Another war has started, an unjust and unjustifiable one, as all wars are.
Moreover, this war is completely illegal and violates the essential norms
of International Law: it contravenes with the basic standards of
civilization in the name of geo-strategic and geo-political interests.
Due to the state of emergency that has been proclaimed in our country, we
cannot express our protest publicly, in the streets and on the squares.
However, we wish to reiterate and confirm:
The deepest ties and coordination with the International Network of Women's
Solidarity against War and the International Network of Women in Black. As
has been the case many times so far, when some of us were not able to
organize street protests, others will appear in the streets of Madrid,
Rome, London, Zagreb, Bangalore, Bogotá, New York, Sydney . on all
meridians, demonstrating the power of global sisterhood, pacifist and

Bush's inflated sense of supremacy

With US and British troops poised to invade Iraq, the
rest of the world is overwhelmingly opposed. Yet Saddam
Hussein is generally seen as a tyrant who must be
disarmed and the United Nations Security Council has
unanimously demanded that he disclose and destroy his
weapons of mass destruction. What has gone wrong?
Iraq is the first instance in which the Bush doctrine
is being applied and it is provoking an allergic
reaction. The doctrine is built on two pillars: first,
the US will do everything in its power to maintain
unquestioned military supremacy; second, it arrogates
the right to pre-emptive action. These pillars support
two classes of sovereignty: American sovereignty, which
takes precedence over international treaties; and the
sovereignty of all other states, which is subject to
the Bush doctrine. This is reminiscent of George
Orwell's Animal Farm: all animals are equal but some
are more equal than others.
The Bush doctrine is grounded in the belief that
international relations are relations of power;
legality and legitimacy are decorations. This belief is
not entirely false but it exaggerates one aspect of
reality - military power - at the exclusion of others.
I see a parallel between the Bush administration's
pursuit of American supremacy and a boom-bust process
or bubble in the stock market. Bubbles do not grow out
of thin air. They have a solid basis in reality but
reality is distorted by misconception. In this case,
the dominant position of the US is the reality, the
pursuit of supremacy the misconception. Reality can
reinforce the misconception but eventually the gap
between reality and its false interpretation becomes
unsustainable. During the self-reinforcing phase, the
misconception may be tested and reinforced. This widens
the gap leading to an eventual reversal. The later it
comes, the more devastating the consequences.
This course of events seems inexorable but a boom-bust
process can be aborted at any stage and few of them
reach the extremes of the recent stock market bubble.
The sooner the process is aborted, the better. This is
how I view the Bush administration's pursuit of
American supremacy.
President George W. Bush came into office with a
coherent strategy based on market fundamentalism and
military power. But before September 11 2001 he lacked
a clear mandate or a well defined enemy. The terrorist
attack changed all that. Terrorism is the ideal enemy.
It is invisible and therefore never disappears. An
enemy that poses a genuine and recognised threat can
effectively hold a nation together. That is
particularly useful when the prevailing ideology is
based on the unabashed pursuit of self- interest. Mr
Bush's administration deliberately fosters fear because
it helps to keep the nation lined up behind the
president. We have come a long way from Franklin D.
Roosevelt's dictum that we have nothing to fear but
fear itself.
But the war on terrorism cannot be accepted as the
guiding principle of US foreign policy. What will
happen to the world if the most powerful country on
earth is solely preoccupied with self-preservation?
The Bush policies have already caused severe unintended
adverse consequences. The Atlantic Alliance is in a
shambles and the European Union divided. The US is a
fearful giant throwing its weight around. Afghanistan
has been liberated but law and order have not been
established beyond Kabul. The Israeli-Palestinian
conflict festers. Beyond Iraq, an even more dangerous
threat looms in North Korea.
The global economy is in recession, stocks are in a
bear market and the dollar is in decline. In the US,
there has been a dramatic shift from budget surplus to
deficit. It is difficult to find a time when political
and economic conditions have deteriorated as rapidly.
The game is not yet over. A rapid victory in Iraq with
little loss of life could cause a dramatic reversal.
The price of oil could fall; the stock market could
celebrate; consumers could overcome their anxieties and
resume spending; and business could respond by stepping
up capital expenditure. America would end its
dependency on Saudi Arabian oil, the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict could become more tractable and
negotiations with North Korea could be started without
a loss of face. This is what Mr Bush is counting on.
Military victory in Iraq would be the easy part. It is
what follows that should give us pause. In a boom-bust
process, passing an early test tends to reinforce the
misconception that has given rise to it. That could
happen here.
It is not too late to prevent the boom-bust process
from getting out of hand. The Security Council could
allow more time for weapons inspections. Military
presence in the region could be reduced - and bolstered
if Iraq balks. An invasion could be mounted at summer's
end. The UN would score a victory. That is what the
French propose and the British could still make it
happen. But the chances are slim; Mr Bush has
practically declared war.
Let us hope that if there is war, it will be swift and
claim few lives. Removing Mr Hussein is a good thing,
yet the way Mr Bush is going about it must be
condemned. America must play a more constructive role
if humanity is to make any progress.

As the Bush administration began its attack on Iraq, using
the sons and daughters of America to kill and be killed
for his dreams of conquest, peace-loving people throughout
the United States and around the world refused to be
silenced and took to the streets in some of the largest
global protests ever seen. As anti-war demonstrators
prepare to go into the streets in vast numbers on Saturday
March 22, the protests in the first hours of the U.S. war
of aggression have already reached an unprecedented
number. From New York City to the White House in
Washington DC, San Francisco and other west coast cities,
and scores of other towns and cities throughout the
country, people resisted and protested the war today while
they made plans for mass actions on Saturday.
"What will follow will not be a repeat of any other
conflict. It will be of a force and scope and scale beyond
what has been seen before," Donald Rumsfeld threatened
today. He was met with rolling protests across the world
including mass actions in cities across the U.S. as people
responded to calls to walk out and showed today that there
would be "No Business as Usual."
Students walked out of their schools and marched with
workers leaving their jobs and others coming out of their
homes, demanding an end to this war drive. In New York
City many thousands of protestors overflowed police
attempts to barricade them at Times Square and marched
through the city in defiance of a police ban on marches.
In San Francisco thousands of people shut down the
business district and more than a thousand were arrested.
Late into the evening thousands more were occupying Lake
Shore Drive in Chicago and a huge number of people were
arrested. In Washington DC high school students walked out
of classes and marched through the city beginning at the
White House, where more protestors demonstrated outside
Lafayette Park into the evening, despite the White House's
demand that the "People's Park" be closed to protests.
Earlier in the morning protestors stopped morning traffic
on D.C.'s Key Bridge. In Philadelphia peace activists shut
down traffic on Broad Street and protested outside the
Federal Building. More than 1000 high school students
walked out of school in Minneapolis and St. Paul. There
were emergency anti-war demonstrations in cities in every
state from Lexington, KY and Knoxville, TN to Boston, from
Cleveland to Austin to Chapel Hill, NC.
There were spontaneous protests across the world as
hundreds of thousands of people converged on U.S.
Embassies in Buenos Aries, Manila, Paris, Seoul and
Brussels, and made visible the overwhelming popular
opposition to Bush's war on Iraq, including in Ankara,
Rome, Milan, Taiwan, Calgary, London, Damascus, Cairo,
Quito, Bangkok, Johannesburg, Calcutta, Glasgow, Brasilia,
Kiev and Moscow. Thousands of students marched through
Madrid; a hundred thousand people filled the streets of
Athens; and 50,000 marched under the Brandenburg Gate in
Berlin.
The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition, which organized for today's
"If War Breaks Out -- Walk Out" actions, is mobilizing to
be in the streets on Saturday, March 22 in New York City,
Washington DC, San Francisco and throughout the country.

* In NYC, protest at 11:30 a.m., assemble on Broadway
between 41st and 36th St.
