In bulgarischen Behindertenheimen erwartet geistig behinderte Menschen
derzeit ein schreckliches Schicksal:
Kälte, Unterernährung, Misshandlungen und "Ruhigstellen" sind an der
Tagesordung, Kinder werden meist ohne jegliche Therapie einfach "liegen
gelassen", die WärterInnen kennen nicht einmal ihre Namen...
amnesty international versucht diese Zustände in einer internationalen
Aktion zu verbessern und bittet Sie um Ihre Mithilfe:
Am Weltgesundheitstag, dem 7. April, veranstalten wir im Rahmen eines
"Bulgarien-Aktionstages" eine Mahnwache vor der bulgarischen Botschaft bzw.
möchten der BotschafterinTausende Petitions-Unterschriften übergeben.

Kein Blut für Öl! Für eine aktive Antikriegspolitik Österreichs!
Wir demonstrieren gegen den von den USA und GB geführten Krieg gegen den
Irak
Ø Weil die Zahl der Toten und Verletzten von Tag zu Tag steigt und sich
eine humanitäre Katastrophe im Irak abzeichnet. Ähnlich wie beim Golfkrieg
Anfang der 90er Jahre ist die Bevölkerung Hauptleidtragende des Krieges.
Der damalige Krieg und seine Folgewirkungen haben laut Information der UNO
einer Million Menschen das Leben gekostet.
Ø Weil die Begründungen der US-Regierung für den Krieg fadenscheinig sind.
Die UN-Inspektoren haben bislang keine Massenvernichtungswaffen gefunden;
außerdem sind die USA selbst die größten Besitzer von
Massenvernichtungswaffen; sie und ihre westlichen Verbündeten haben das
Regime von Saddam Hussein viele Jahre lang mit Waffen beliefert.
Ø Weil dieser Krieg einen Flächenbrand weiterer Konflikte im Nahen Osten
entzündet, aber kein einziges Problem löst. Die große Mehrheit der Menschen
in dieser Region lehnt diesen Krieg ab.
Ø Weil die tatsächlichen Ursachen für diesen Krieg darin liegen, diese
Region politisch zu unterwerfen, damit die großen Erdölkonzerne Zugriff auf
den Erdölreichtum dieser Region bekommen. Auch die europäischen Großmächte
wollen sich dabei ein Stück der Beute sichern.
Ø Weil die Hauptprofiteure des Krieges die Rüstungsindustrien sind; Krieg
dient als Vorwand, die Rüstungsausgaben in die Höhe zu schrauben und die
Sozialausgaben zu senken.
Ø Weil die Wurzeln des "Terrorismus" nicht mit Krieg sondern nur mit einer
Überwindung der extremen Ungleichheit von Arm und Reich auf unserem Globus
bekämpft werden können.
Ø Weil Bomben keinen Frieden schaffen - das haben die Kriege gegen
Jugoslawien und Afghanistan bewiesen.
Wir fordern:
§ Sofortiger Stopp aller Kriegshandlungen!
§ Sofortige Aufhebung der Sanktionen gegen den Irak!
§ Keine Kolonisierung des Iraks durch die Großmächte!
Wir fordern von der österreichischen Bundesregierung, die Rolle eines aktiv
neutralen Landes wahrzunehmen. Österreich muß endlich eine aktive
Antikriegspolitik betreiben und sich gemeinsam mit anderen Staaten in der
UNO für die Durchsetzung dieser Forderungen eintreten.
Österreich darf den Krieg weder direkt noch indirekt unterstützen:
§ Keine Durchfuhr und keine Überflüge für Soldaten und Kriegsgerät jeder
Art.
§ Rückzug der österreichischen Einheiten von Kfor, Sfor; keine Beteiligung
in Mazedonien; diese Militäreinheiten halten den Rücken frei für weitere
Kriege und sichern die Inbesitznahme durch die EU im Windschatten der USA.
§ Keine Zusammenarbeit mit den Militarisierern: Ausstieg aus der NATO-PfP
und Rückzug aus den EU-Militärgremien Politisches und
Sicherheitspolitischen Komitee und Westeuropäische Rüstungsgruppe.
§ Keine Soldaten, keine Waffen, kein Euro für die EU-Interventionsarmee.================================================

S.g. Herr Kralicek,
Schon seit geraumer Zeit kommt uns bei Ihrer Sex-Kolumne regelmäßig das
Grausen. Und wir wissen, wir sind bei weitem nicht die einzigen Leserinnen
mit dieser Empfindung.
Sind wir inzwischen schon einiges von Ihnen gewöhnt, drehte uns die
Sex-Liste im "Falter" 13/03 den Magen um:
Männer "hören gerne":
"1. Ja."
"2. Jaaa!"
und "nicht so gerne":
"1. Nein."
"2. Nein heißt bei mir nein."
!!!!!?????
Das kann doch wohl nicht Ihr Ernst sein?
Ist Ihnen nicht klar, welches Beziehungsbild hier transportiert wird?
Mag ja sein, dass manche Männer sich schmollend in eine Ecke begeben, weil
sie ein "Nein" nicht erwartet haben. Aber darauf zu warten, dass die Frau
noch deutlicher werden muss (was ein weiteres Drängen des Mannes
impliziert) und das dann auch noch in einer "Liste" an die zweite Stelle zu
setzen (was ja auch eine Häufigkeit im Vorkommen impliziert), ist
schlichtweg abstoßend!
Ein Mann, der ein NEIN zweimal hören muss, bis er es kapiert, hat sich
selbst disqualifiziert!
Dass die durchaus kritischen Redakteurinnen im "Falter" gegen die Sex-Liste
nicht protestiert haben, können wir uns nur so erklären, dass diese erst im
letzten Moment und lange nach Redaktionsschluss eingetrudelt ist.
Erklären Sie uns doch bitte, warum wir unserem ersten Impuls, das
"Falter"-Abo umgehend abzubestellen, nicht folgen sollen...

Concordia-Publizistikpreis für AUGUSTIN
Hommage an ein Selbstbewusstseinslaboratorium
Die jeweils mit 3650 Euro dotierten Concordia-Publizistikpreise gehen
heuer an den AUGUSTIN und den ORF-Sender "Radio Österreich
International" (ROI). Neben dem Renner-Preis und dem Gatterer-Preis -
mit letzterem war der AUGUSTIN 2002 ausgezeichnet worden - gilt der
Concordia-Preis als das renommierteste österreichische
Journalismus-Gütesiegel.
"Die Concordia ist den Menschenrechten, der Demokratie, der Presse- und
Informationsfreiheit verbunden", heißt es im § 1 des Statuts der
JournalistInnen- und SchriftstellerInnenvereinigung. Die
Juryentscheidungen verstehen sich als dieser Zielsetzung entsprechende
Signale an die Öffentlichkeit. "Hervorragende publizistische Leistungen"
für Menschenrechte und für die Pressefreiheit sollen auf diese Art
gewürdigt werden.
Der AUGUSTIN stand in der Kategorie "Menschenrechte" zur Wahl. Der aus
Johann P. Fritz, Andrea Helige, Elisabeth Horvath, Herbert Krejci,
Ferdinand Lacina und Manfred Scheuch zusammengesetzten Preisjury fiel
das "starke soziale Engagement des Projekts" auf. Der AUGUSTIN habe
"Obdachlosen, Arbeitslosen und sozial Ausgegrenzten eine neue Würde und
ein neues Selbstbewusstsein gegeben", heißt es in der Jurybegründung.
Dem ist aus AUGUSTIN-Sicht hinzuzufügen: Es ist ein schönes Gefühl für
KolporteurInnen, Preiswürdiges zu vertreiben.
ROI gewann in der Kategorie "Pressefreiheit". Seit mehr als drei
Jahrzehnten, so die Jury, vermittle ROI gelebte Informationsfreiheit. In
Regionen mit staatlich gelenkten Medien habe der auf Mittelwelle
(Frequenz 1476) und Kurzwelle zu empfangende ORF-Sender oft die
einfachste und billigste Möglichkeit für die Bevölkerung geboten, sich
unabhängig zu informieren. Die Brisanz dieses Concordia-Jury-Entscheids:
ROI wird in diesen Tagen von der neuen ORF-Führung abgewickelt.
Die Jury vergibt immer auch Ehrenpreise an SchriftstellerInnen und
JournalistInnen, die für ihr Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet werden. Heuer
wurde damit die Autorin Brigitte Hamann geehrt. Die Liste der bisherigen
Concordia-Ehrenpreisträger ist namhaft: Vaclav Havel, Kardinal Franz
König, George Tabori. Auch in der Kategorie der dotierten
Concordia-Preise kann der AUGUSTIN auf respektable VorgängerInnen
verweisen, unter ihnen Antonia Rados (ORF), Florian Klenk (Falter) und
Hans Rauscher (Standard).
Die Übergabe der Concordia-Preise erfolgt am Freitag, 25. April im
Presseclub Concordia in der Bankgasse.================================================

Wien (OTS) - Der GLB-Wien solidarisiert sich mit der Kampagne der SLP
(Sozialistische Linkspartei) gegen die Vertreibung der Mairo-Klinik. Der
GLB-Wien solidarisiert sich mit der Frauensprecherin der SLP, die von Pro
Life verklagt wurde.
DENN: ABTREIBUNG IST FRAUENRECHT !
Gestern ging der Prozess des HLI("Human Life International")-Chefs (radikale
Abtreibungsgegner) gegen die SLP-Frauensprecherin Claudia Sorger in die
nächste Runde. Wieder kamen erschreckende Dinge über die Vorgangsweise von
"Human Life International" (HLI) ans Tageslicht. Eine Zeugin sagte aus, dass
sie von einer HLI-Mitarbeiterin nach Vorspiegelung falscher Tatsachen ca. 2
Stunden in einem abgeschlossenen Raum festgehalten wurde. Ein Arzt beschrieb
seine Erfahrungen mit HLI als "Psychoterror". Eine praktische Ärztin, selbst
Opfer der HLI-Fundamentalisten, berichtete von einem auf ihr Auto
aufgemalten Galgen und die Drohung "Der Tod kommt nicht sanft". Ein weiterer
Verhandlungstermin wurde angesetzt, da eine wichtige Zeugin nicht anwesend
war. Ein ausführlicher Prozessbericht wird bald unter www.slp.at zu lesen

Wien (OTS) - Als "Vorschlaghammer zur Zerschlagung des Pensionssystems"
wertet der Gewerkschaftliche Linksblock (GLB) die sogenannte
"Pensionsreform", wie sie von der Bundesregierung durchgezogen werden soll.
Der Vorsitzende des GLB, Manfred Groß, fasst die geplanten Maßnahmen wie
folgt zusammen: "Länger arbeiten, bedeutend weniger Geld, extreme
Ungerechtigkeiten, vor allem gegen die Frauen und nicht zuletzt Rückzug des
Staates aus der sozialen Verantwortung".
Manfred Groß: "Der Mix aus Abschaffung der Frühpension, Erhöhung der
Abschläge auf 4,2 Prozent pro Jahr eines früheren Pensionsantrittes ohne
Deckelung, die Senkung der Steigerungsbeträge von 2 auf 1,78 Prozent pro
Versicherungjahr und die schrittweise Ausdehnung der Durchrechnung auf 40
Jahre stellen für die Versicherten einen schweren Eingriff in ihre
Lebensplanung dar und werden viele, vor allem weibliche Versicherte mit
weniger und schlechter bewerteten Versicherungszeiten, in soziale Notlagen
bringen. Einfacher gesagt: Dem Wachstum der Armut und der
Altersabeitslosigkeit wird Vorschub geleistet - und das in einer Situation,
in der sich die PolitikerInnen nicht einmal dazu durchringen können, die
ärgsten Sumpfblüten ihres eigenen Privilegiensystems zu beseitigen!".
Nach Einschätzung des Gewerkschaftlichen Linksblocks, der dieses Thema bei
seiner Bundeskonferenz am Samstag der nächsten Woche behandeln und ein
Aktionsprogramm gegen den Sozialabbau ausarbeiten wird, muss dieser Schlag
gegen das Pensionssystem mit anderen geplanten Verschlechterungen, etwa im
Arbeitslosenrecht in Verbindung gesehen werden: "Wenn die Regierung die
Zumutbarkeitsregeln bei der Arbeitsvermittlung aufbricht und die
Notstandsunterstützung in die Sozialhilfe auslagert, kann man sich
vorstellen, wie es älteren ArbeitnehmerInnen, die keinen Arbeitsplatz mehr
bekommen, denen aber der Pensionsantritt verwehrt bleibt, ergehen wird: Sie
werden nach Jahrzehnten harter Arbeit und Beitragsleistung zu Sozialfällen
ohne ausreichende Versorgung. Das ist schreiendes Unrecht und
Vertrauensbruch!", meint Manfred Groß und weist auf die Lage am Arbeitsmarkt
hin, die durch hohe Altersarbeitslosigkeit gekennzeichnet ist.
Der Hintergrund für diese unsozialen und unannehmbaren Maßnahmen ist die
Budgetsanierung Marke Schwarz-Blau, die "weniger von Weitsicht und sozialer
Verantwortung als vielmehr von Inkompetenz, Dummheit und Gewissenlosigkeit"
getragen wird: "Wer auf Kosten der ArbeitnehmerInnen den Staatsbeitrag zum
Sozialsystem senken will, gleichzeitig aber sündteure Abfangjäger anschafft;
wer über Sozialabbaumaßnahmen und Belastungen die Konjunktur zusätzlich
abwürgt, gleichzeitig aber seine Rechnung auf ein höheres Steueraufkommen
baut; und wer nicht zuletzt die Großkonzerne und Finanzspekulanten mit
Geschenken bedient, den Menschen aber den verbliebenen Rest an Sicherheit im
Alter, bei Arbeitslosigkeit und Krankheit raubt, handelt unsozial und
verantwortungslos.
Der Gewerkschaftliche Linksblock ruft den ÖGB auf, den geplanten Anschlag
gegen das Pensionssystem nicht kampflos hinzunehmen und im Sinne der
Urabstimmung im Interesse seiner Mitglieder aktiv zu werden. Gewerkschaften
können und dürfen sich in dieser Situation nicht mehr "heraushalten" und
sich auf Verhandlungen beschränken: Die Regierung hat den Vorschlaghammer
bereits in die Hand genommen - sie kann nur durch breit angelegte Aktionen
und gewerkschaftliche Kampfmaßnahmen und Streiks gestoppt werden!"

Kaltenegger: "Wir müssen Opposition sein"!
Die Medien berichten am Freitag ausführlich über die erste Sitzung des
neugewählten Grazer Gemeinderates. Im folgenden einige Auszüge:
"KP-Stadtrat Ernst Kaltenegger nutzte seine Rede, die nicht zu Stande
gekommene Koalition mit SPÖ und Grünen zu rechtfertigen: Es gebe im Sinne
von vor der Wahl gegebenen Versprechen einen "Sachzwang zur
Glaubwürdigkeit", "sachliche Gründe" hätten eine "weitergehende
Zusammenarbeit" nicht möglich gemacht, man werde aber konstruktive Arbeit
leisten." (Kurier online, 28.3. 03).
"KPÖ-Chef Kaltenegger erklärt später sein Verständnis von Verantwortung mit
einer Frage: Kann eine Regierungsbank zugleich Opposition sein? Und liefert
gleich die Antwort nach: "Sie muss es sein!" "Eine gute Opposition kann

A novel-in-stories of refugees, on their way to somewhere else.

"Wolfy and the Strudelbakers" by Zvi Jagendorf, Dewi Lewis, London, 2001,

"Once they had been refugees, then aliens, then evacuees, always transients
with suitcases on the way to somewhere else. Now they were commuters but
neither would ever get home again. Home had been taken away by armies of
looters, by a fading and falsifying memory, by restlessness and unease and
in the end by the ghosts who dispossess the living and who will inherit the
earth." In these words, Jagendorf describes the background of the
characters of the refugees he has depicted in his novel-in-stories "Wolfy
and the Strudelbakers."
He tells about Austrian refugees who arrived penniless in England and tried
to deal with the loneliness, the misery and the decline in social status.
The writer observes the situation of these refugees from a double point of
view: that of the refugee child Wolfie Helfgott, who is the main character
in the work, and that of the same character as a grown-up - he is called
Will Halfgo as an adult - who observes himself as a child from the heights
of his maturity. In addition to the two of them, the narrator observes them
and their family with charm, grace and mercy.
The family of refugees - Wolfie, his father Chaim, his mother Frida, his
uncle Mendl, his cousin Bernie and his aunts Rosa and Sophie - lives in
three dimensions of time and in three spaces: Vienna at the end of the
1930s and prior to that; London and a town on its outskirts in the 1940s;
and the Land of Israel, to which some members of the family fled, and which
the main character Wolfie-Will visits.
Thus the characters also live in three cultural realms: the
Austrian-Eastern European culture they brought with them from their country
of origin, of which baking strudel is part; the local English culture; and
the Jewish religious-ethnic culture that differentiates Wolfie from the
other children and makes him and his family eternal strangers, despite
their readiness and desire to accommodate themselves to their new
surroundings. The Land of Israel is another foreign culture, with which the
family is in touch through correspondence, but which does not play a real
part in the plot (except as a cemetery for the family's ancestors).
Holocaust in the background
The novel was written originally in English (I have read it in the
original, and the translation seems to me accurate and pleasant), and bits
in Yiddish and German are the stylistic manifestation of its
multiculturalism. The social-historical aspect of the novel is secondary,
and appears in minor incidents. The World War, the Blitz in London and the
Holocaust of European Jewry are in the background, not in the forefront, as
are anti-Semitism and the horrors of being a refugee. All these exist more
in the memories of Wolfie's parents (and some of the other characters) more
than in the child's memory. He hears about situations involving Chaim and
Frida only toward the end of the book, from his Aunt Sophie. The scars
borne by Wolfie's father who rescued his grandfather from Nazis who were
shooting at him are part of the family myth or secrets that the father
reveals to his son. Jewish anxieties and fears are secondary, and more than
the exiles-refugees are saliently Jews, they are simply different,
refijees. Yet at the same time, it must be recalled that they are so
because they are Jewish.
The "otherness" is revealed, for example, in the story of the loneliness
and death of the Jewish Kalman Gold in Vienna before the Anschluss because
he refused to desecrate the Sabbath, and in the stories of the cemeteries
in England and in Israel where members of the family have been buried and
to which Will makes pilgrimages. These are the frame of the work, and
testify that from a certain perspective, this is not only a story of
immigration and maturation, but also a requiem for the generation of the
fathers that has passed away.
The "novel-in-stories" is also a bildungsroman of a refugee child, whose
education involves a constant rift between his family heritage and the
demands of gentile English society. For example, when he receives a
Christmas card from the bishop as a prize, to his surprise, this makes his
father angry, and when he forgets his fringed ritual undergarment at the
swimming pool, he needs the intervention of the school chaplain to get it
back. The Kaddish (memorial) prayer for his mother entails tardiness at
school. The family meddles in his business because of its taboos and
values, and the strangeness in his environment is very oppressive to the
child. More than he is shunned by the gentiles and their observances, the
Jewish observances lead to his shunning.
In this pathetic education, the boy is orphaned of his mother, lives in his
uncle's home and is witness to the insults that his father suffers at his
workplace. The situations that are depicted are tragicomic: from the
description of his uncle's situation in the internment camp for aliens in
England, through the humiliation of his father at his workplace when he
serves as the assistant to the semi- illiterate uncle in taking stock of
his merchandise, and to the description of the sexual experiences of his
cousin Bernie, who goes to study Hebrew in Soho in order to have his first
sexual experience with a prostitute.
There is strong tragicomic element in the exchange of letters between the
family in England and the grandparents in Tel Aviv, to which the boy is
always asked to add a few words ("zu schreiben"); the letters are
ostensibly by the mother (who has died), and are sent to spare the
grandparents grief. The author writes these depictions with charm and
humor, which take the sting out of the mother's death, the father's
humiliation, the family's letters to the grandparents and even the
manipulations of Aunt Sophie, who has cheated Wolfie's family of its assets.
Jesus' fringes
The humor is created mainly from the gap between the point of view of the
child and that of the narrator and the adult addressees, who understand the
gap between the child and the reality. One wonderfully humorous episode,
for example, is the one in which Wolfie and the school chaplain discuss the
role and significance of the fringed garment in Jewish life:
"`Helfgott, do you think Jesus wore fringes?'
"`Yes sir, everybody did in those days.'
"Then he had an afterthought. `But they probably didn't take them off when
they all went swimming in the Sea of Galilee. They probably helped him
float in the water.'
"They both laughed for religious reasons which they, for a change, shared."
The (very gentle, very British) humor is studded throughout the book but
what I found most captivating is the author's humane attitude toward his
refugee characters. Thus, for example, there is the description of the
moment when the son and his widowed father are alone together in the
father's house (the boy spends most of his time at his uncle's house) and
the father, who is helping his son bathe, tries to explain the first
changes of puberty that his body is undergoing and will undergo. This scene
is one of the jewels of the book.
Zvi Jagendorf loves, understands and brings us close to these permanently
transient people, always "with suitcases on the way to somewhere else."

Bau des Ilisu-Staudammes in der Türkei muss gestoppt werden!

Sollte die Türkei in die Kurdengebiete im Norden Iraks einmarschieren,
wäre
dies neben der weiteren Unterdrückung dieser Minderheit auch ein Griff
nach
den wertvollen Öl- und Wasserreserven der Region. Darauf weist die
Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker (GfbV) mit Nachdruck hin. Denn seit die
türkische Regierung im Jahr 1982 den Bau des Ilisu-Staudamms am Tigris in
Türkisch-Kurdistan beschlossen hat, liegt sie im Clinch mit Syrien und dem
Irak. Beide Staaten befürchten nämlich, dass dadurch zuviel Wasser am
Oberlauf des Stromes abgezapft wird und sie danach auf dem Trocknen sitzen
werden.
Der Ilisu-Staudamm wird im Rahmen des Südostanatolien-Projektes (Güney
Anadolu Projesi, GAP) gebaut und in frühestens acht Jahren fertig sein.
Die
Staumauer wird 1.820 Meter lang und 135 Meter hoch werden. Ein 313
Quadratkilometer großes Gebiet, in dem unter anderem weite Teile der
archäologisch und kulturhistorisch außerordentlich bedeutsamen kurdischen
Stadt Hasankeyf liegen, soll überflutet werden. 101 Städte und Dörfer
werden
teilweise, 82 weitere vollkommen im Stausee verschwinden. Bereits geräumt
wurden 88 Dörfer und Städte, in denen 15.581 Menschen lebten. Die
enteigneten und umgesiedelten kurdischen Kleinbauern warten noch immer auf
eine angemessene Entschädigung. 43.733 Menschen leben in den übrigen 95
Siedlungen, die noch nicht zerstört wurden. Damit sind 60.000 Kurden
unmittelbar von dem Großprojekt betroffen. Einmütig lehnen die Kurden das
Mega-Vorhaben ab. Zu wach ist die Erinnerung an die Zerstörung von 3.428
kurdischen Dörfern durch türkische Sicherheitskräfte in den 90er Jahren.
Es besteht die konkrete Gefahr, dass die Türkei den derzeit tobenden Krieg
im Irak dazu benutzt, das autonome Kurdistan im Norden den Landes zu
erobern. Damit könnte die Errichtung einer Autonomie des kurdischen
Gebietes
verhindert werden. Gleichzeitig würde das Staudammprojekt dem
unmittelbaren
Zugriff des Irak, dessen Grenzen derzeit kaum 70 Kilometer entfernt sind,
entzogen.
Mit dem Bau des Staudammes gerät aber auch das Menschenrecht auf sauberes
Trinkwasser, unverzichtbar für das Überleben des Menschen am Unterlauf des
Tigris, zunehmend in Gefahr. Dessen sollten sich auch die Firmen bewusst
sein, die am Projekt beteiligt sind. Zwar ist der britische Baukonzern
"Balfour Beatty" vor zwei Jahren ausgestiegen, weiterhin dabei ist jedoch
die "Sulzer Hydro", ein Schweizer Konzern, der weltweit im Bau von
Staudämmen engagiert ist. Die "Sulzer Hydro" ist ihrerseits eine
Tochterfirma der österreichischen "Voest Alpine Technologie AG", die am
gesamten GAP-Projekt massiv beteiligt ist.
Die GfbV fordert den Ausstieg dieser Firmen aus dem Projekt und dessen
völlige Einstellung. Denn letztendlich müssten die Tausenden von Kurden,
die
in diesem Gebiet leben, die Unkosten dafür tragen - ganz zu schweigen von
den negativen ökologischen Auswirkungen, die der Staudamm mit sich bringen
würde.

Der 106. Verlust im Todesfastenwiderstand : YUSUF ARICI
Das Ankara Numune (Krankenhaus), welches zum Forschungs-
Massakerzentrum der Zwangsernährung geworden ist, wurde erneut Zeuge
des Widerstands eines unserer Todesfastenkämpfer.
Yusuf ARICI, der in der 8. Todesfastengruppe im Kampf gegen die
Isolation teilnahm, hat seinen Kampf als DHKP-C Gefangener am 1. Mai
2002 im Ankara Sincan F-Typ Nazi-Camp begonnen.
Im Januar 2003 haben seine körperlichen Beschwerden aufgrund des
Todesfastens zugenommen. Jedoch hat er mit seiner revolutionären
Willenskraft den Kampf gegen die Isolation bis zum 26. März 2003
fortgeführt.
Yusuf ist im Kampf gegen die Isolationsgefängnisse des Imperialismus
und der Oligarchie gefallen.
Auch wenn in unserem Land die Regierungen gewechselt haben, es hat
sich nichts am Nazi-Verständnis in den Isolationsgefängnissen
geändert.
Auch Yusuf hat die Hartnäckigkeit der revolutionären Willensstärke
unter jeder Bedingung gezeigt.
Während der Imperialismus in unserer nächsten Nähe Bomben auf das
irakische Volk wirft und es massakriert, dauern gleichzeitig die
Zwangsernährungsmaßnahmen in den Isolationsgefängnissen des
Imperialismus an:
DAS TODESFASTEN IST EIN KAMPF GEGEN DEN IMPERIALISMUS UND FASCHISMUS
Der Imperialismus will die Völker der Welt mit Bomben in die Knie
zwingen. Insofern es den imperialistischen und faschistischen Regimen
gelingt, die rebellierenden Revolutionär/innen zu fassen, versuchen
sie diese in den Gefängnissen zu vereinsamen, ihre Persönlichkeit zu
rauben und ihre Willensstärke zu zerstören. In dieser Hinsicht zeigt
der Todesfastenwiderstand, dass der Widerstand gegen Imperialismus
und Faschismus unter jeder Bedingung fortgesetzt werden wird.
MAN VERSUCHT DAS TODESFASTEN, IN DEN MAUERN DES SCHWEIGENS ZU
ERSTICKEN
Der Göbels'sche Hikmet Sami Türk, wollte von der Öffentlichkeit ein
Jahr Zeit, um das Todesfasten zu beenden.
Er sagte: "Wenn der Widerstand ein Jahr lang keine Unterstützung
findet, die Presse nicht über den Widerstand berichtet, dann ist er
vorbei". Die Frist der Göbels ist schon längst abgelaufen. Die
Oligarchie und die vom Imperialismus gesteuerte Presse sind dieser
Forderung wortwörtlich nachgekommen, aber der Widerstand hörte nicht
auf.
IM TODESFASTENFASTENWIDERSTAND LIEGT DIE KRAFT DES REVOLUTIONÄREN
WILLENS
Der Todesfastenwiderstand stützt sich auf die Kraft der
widerständischsten und stärksten Willenskraft der Völker und auf die
des revolutionären Willens.
Deshalb dauert der Widerstand im dritten Jahr, trotz 106 Gefallener
und mehr als 500 Menschen mit physischen und psychischen Schäden,
immer noch an.

Early results of the March 16 elections in El Salvador
have supporters of the FMLN dancing in the streets.
The FMLN [Farabundo Marti Front for National
Liberation] swept to victory in ten of the fourteen
major cities around the capital, winning the mayor's
offices in San Salvador, Santa Ana, Zacatecaluca,
Tejutecupeque and Usulutan. The FMLN won in the three
largest municipalities in the country. Santa Tecla and
Soyapango went to the FMLN by two-to-one margins.
CISPES election monitors in the country reported FMLN
victory parties going into the early morning hours as
election results clearly indicated a major advance for
El Salvador's Left. The FMLN carried out the armed
struggle in El Salvador from 1980 to 1992 when a peace
agreement was signed. Since the war, the FMLN has made
steady advances in the electoral arena as the second
most powerful party in the country.
The right-wing ARENA party holds the presidency and
controls a powerful voting bloc in the Legislative
Assembly. The momentum of the March 16 victory,
according to many observers, could propel the FMLN into
a presidential victory in two years.
Reports from El Salvador indicate that the FMLN will
hold more seats in the unicameral National Assembly
than any other party when all results are in.
Spokespersons for the FMLN pointed out that the
struggle against the privatization of El Salvador's
human services---including the health care system now
under attack---will be much stronger with the FMLN
advances in the legislative branch.
The victory for mayor of San Salvador was especially
heartening to progressive forces in the country. The
right-wing ARENA candidate, Evelyn Jacir de Lovo, was
ahead in the polls until recently and outspent the FMLN
candidate, Carlos Rivas Zamora, by a wide margin.
Coming from behind, Zamora scored a decisive and
stunning victory which even impressed the right-wing
newspapers of the capital. They printed scores of
photos of fist-pumping, cheering and hugging FMLN
militants---many of them young people and dressed in
the red color of the Front---celebrating the victory.
Large numbers of international election observers from
various countries and organizations---including several
delegations from Los Angeles---spread across the
country to document irregularities.
A CISPES delegate reported this morning by phone that
"the FMLN and progressive forces in the country are
jubilant and the struggle against privatization has
received a strong positive jolt." [Further updates from

October 4, 2002A SEPTEMBER DAWN, 2002, IN THE VENEZUELAN COUNTRYSIDE: From a white vehicle
that passes by a parking lot, some "unknown persons" throw four molotov
cocktails. On the other side, someone puts out the fires right away: no
victim, no damage. It's just that the parking lot belongs to a regional
affiliate of the commercial TV chain, "Globovision." 1 And that the "attack"
happens a few hours from the official visit to the region by President Hugo
Chávez: and at the precise moment when a tripartite delegation of the
Organization of American States (OAS), the Carter Foundation and the PNUD
are investigating the issue of freedom of speech in Venezuela.
Next, Globovision denounces, with grand visual spectacle, a "Bolshevist
attack with grenades." It broadcasts archival footage of a car-bomb attempt
against a Venezuelan president, decades ago. The editor of the daily El
Nacional, Miguel Enrique Otero2, without waiting for any investigation,
confirms: "The government has created para-governmental squads to act
against the media and journalists," and, "Chavez's speech is responsible for
the aggressions."3. El Nacional's front page displays an immediate letter
from Robert Ménard, director of Reporters Without Borders, who demands that
the Venezuelan government put an end to violence against the press.
A week later, when the OAS has left the country, the daily El Nacional
resumes its campaign of aggressions against the Community Media4. This time,
the target is the Community Radio station of Antimano. The reporter mentions
a poster on the wall of the studio as proof of its Chavista nature, and
criticizes the fact that the radio station says that there was a coup d'etat
in Venezuela. El Nacional denounces the "illegality" of this radio station
and 100 Community Media outlets in the entire country. Some weeks ago, the
radio station in El Nacional's target was victim of harassment by security
forces in the hands of the Anti-Chavez opposition. Its members were
liberated after the Community Media movement took to the streets.
In reality, El Nacional, a key newspaper in the organization of the coup,
rejects, with any type of argument it can conjure, the possibility of
pluralism of information in Venezuela. Its reporter quotes Miguel Ángel
Martínez, president of the private-sector Chamber of Radio Industries, who
denounces the "illegality" of the Community Radio stations. Martínez, in the
name of the Chamber, publicly signed the decree of the short-lived coup
d'etat last April. Later, in a public assembly on the tourist island of
Margarita, he asked his affiliates to interfere with the frequencies of
Community Media broadcasters when the next coup comes.
>From July to August 2002, Paul-émile Dupret, a development advisor to the
European Parliament, who videotaped a citizen demonstration together with a
team from Community station Catie TV, and later Nicolas Burlaud, a member of
the pirate TV station Primitivi de Marseille in Italy, and Alessandro
Bombassei, of an independent Italian radio station, are peppered with rubber
bullets by the Metropolitan Police who work for a ferocious Chávez opponent,
Mayor Alfredo Peña. Dupret receives no less than 40 bullet wounds, one just
a few centimeters from his eye.
When a Congressman named Barreto asked a journalist from Globovision why his
station was silent about the Bombassei case, the reporter responded: "What
is an Italian journalist doing here in Venezuela?" A little bit later,
Globovision characterizes the Italian (who videotaped the police shooting
with real bullets and with every intent to kill5) as "political advisor to
Catia TV and the Community Media." When Ángel Palacios, independent producer
and author of a documentary about the assault on the Cuban Embassy by the
pro-coup forces, broadcast by the only public TV station, a commercial radio
spokesman twice urged his listeners to go to Palacios' house, noting his
address. His wife and daughter had to hide, as Palacios testified before the
OAS on September 14. Add to this the constant surprise visits by unknown
persons to all the Community Media stations to "be able to see the studio."6
About this campaign of aggressions, there is not a single protest waged by
"Reporters Without Borders" to the elite owners of the large commercial
media7.
Why does "Reporters Without Borders" look the other way when the economic
and media elite organize a coup d'etat and opposition police forces attack
journalists from Community Media? First, because it appears to think that
the only repressive entities are national governments, as if we were still
living in the 19th century. From here, it seems that the "Reporters" group
has a free-market ideology. But if "Reporters Without Borders" has toed the
line of the pro-coup media, it is probably and above all because it allows
them to continue denouncing a president that it has defined from the
beginning as "a future Castro-like dictator."8 The silence of "Reporters
Without Borders" over the fundamental role of the large commercial media in
the repression against Community Media during the April 2002 coup d'etat was
the subject of a detailed analysis by Maurice Lemoine of Le Monde
Diplomatique 9. Lemoine, a specialist in Latin America who has traveled the
region for more than thirty years, and whose journalistic rigor is difficult
to contest, is not the only journalist who has analyzed the strange attitude
of "Reporters Without Borders." Alberto Giordano, a journalist with Narco
News (www.narconews.com) has investigated the case of Nicolás Rivera, a
Community Radio journalist, who continues today in the general population of
a prison. Giordano has formulated a long series of public questions to
"Reporters Without Borders," without any responses from their Ivory Tower.
"Reporters Without Borders" says it is worried about Chavez's "threats of
fiscal audits" of the large Venezuelan media chains. The "Reporters" group
is probably referring to the millions of dollars taken from the country
through the industrial production of TV dramas whose tapes are sold "by the
pound" by a Panamanian intermediary. but later are sold as "intellectual
works" in Miami. For the first time, a government not totally identified
with these large companies dares to hold them accountable to the immense
social needs of the country. At these heights, no commercial media outlet
has been sanctioned for fiscal fraud or for its participation in a coup
d'etat.
"We only defend freedom of speech, we're not interested in the content by
the media outlets," repeats the "Reporters" group.
Even when those media outlets call for repression against independent media
or popular organizations? Would it be so out of place to ask "Reporters
Without Borders" to investigate with a minimum of seriousness the active
complicity of those "media" with repressive forces, local police or
paramilitary groups, and their direct involvement in numerous and persistent
Human Rights violations, not only against the Community Media?
In September, our Community TV station, Teletambores, has produced various
reports about the struggle for land in the state of Yaracuy. The farmers
complain of harassment, torture, numerous assassinations and
"disappearances" committed by local police in service of the opposition that
is opposed to a moderate agrarian reform proposed by President Chávez. Some
of these reports were broadcast by VTV, the only public television station,
and a while later by Zalea TV in Paris, that defends, in France, the Freedom
of Audiovisual Speech. The farmers bitterly complain that none of the large
commercial media has reported the repression. Clearly, the media falls
silent when there are massive assassinations of farmers. because its owners
belong to the same economic groups as the plantation owners. Even worse:
those "media" outlets widely justify the bloody repression by calling the
farmers without land who are planting on the first acres resulting from the
agrarian reform "terrorists," and, "invaders trained by the Cubans,"
etcetera.
The disproportion between the public show by these "media" outlets in the
cases of very opportune "attacks" and their hiding of massive Human Rights
violations is impressive.
If the Community Media has one vital task, it is to reinvent the idea of
information, because the commercial, monopolistic TV stations - sub-copies
of United States television - have destroyed that very concept. It's as if
no International Convention of Journalism ever existed. It's "anchors"
interrupt their brief news items during the programs to sell all kinds of
products - shampoo, fashion clothes, miracle creams - without any type of
transition. The "news reporters" are reduced to parrot a unilateral and
obsessive form of political propaganda. They are absolutely racist (you
won't see a black anchorperson, for example) when the population is, in a
large part, of African origin. What's more, they've always looked with scorn
upon the popular neighborhoods where 80-percent of the population lives,
describing them as the ultimate bastions of hell, of vice, of delinquency,
and calling for an iron fist against their inhabitants.
It's an old trick of History that private-sector communication businesses
pass themselves off as "information media." This permits them to invoke
"freedom of speech" when they see their economic interests threatened. From
there, their fevered search for international and "super-objective" allies.
The "super-objectivity" displayed by the letters authored by "Reporters
Without Borders" gives the campaign by the commercial media great efficiency
in circulating around the world, for example, among other Human Rights
organizations who believe "Reporters Without Borders" without question.
"Reporters Without Borders" did not exist when Armand Mattelard analyzed the
alliance between the large comercial media with the Inter-American Press
Association (IAPA, an organization of large Latin American newspaper
companies) to topple the Allende government in Chile in 197310. "The
judicial investigation of the administration of the daily El Mercurio,
accused of fiscal irregularities, has served as an excuse to denounce
supposed coercive measures against the 'free press'. The message emitted by
the upper-class Chilean daily then repeats IAPA's report, backed now by the
authority conferred by the fact that it was reproduced abroad. We are
witnessing the tautology of the IAPA. It's campaign results to be no more
than a giant biting of its own tail."

central role in the "media coup d'etat" against the Venezuelan president in
April 2002. The commercial TV stations don't hesitate to fabricate evidence
at any hour. From this came the report of the "pro-Chavez ambush", the fruit
of the manipulation of selective editing of video, as it demonstrated a
synchronized report to characterize persons who defended their lives against
various snipers placed by the pro-coup forces atop office buildings as
"Chavist assassins." This version, broadcast widely around the world, was
used as the basis for the statement by White House Press Secretary Ari
Fleischer's statement that "Chávez ordered the shooting of the people."

the music." Presided over by Spain and very conscious of the oil interests
of Spanish banks, the European Union avoided condemning the coup d'etat of
April, contradicting its democratic slogans.

Venezuelan Who Led Strike Is Given Asylum by Costa Rica

CARACAS, Venezuela, March 14 - A labor leader who feared for his life at
the hands of groups loyal to President Hugo Chávez was granted political
asylum by Costa Rica today.
Carlos Ortega, the president of the million-member Confederation of
Venezuelan Workers and a leader of the recent national strike against the
Chávez government, was spirited into the Costa Rican Embassy on Thursday
night after appealing for help from diplomats here and abroad.
The Venezuelan government accepted Costa Rica's decision and issued a
communiqué from Vice President José Vicente Rangel that said "everyone is
free to take the decision that suits them best."
Mr. Ortega went into hiding on Feb. 19 after a judge issued a warrant for
his arrest on charges relating to his role in organizing the general
strike. The Chávez government had asked that Mr. Ortega and the leader of a
major business association, Carlos Fernández, face trial on charges of
rebellion, treason, instigation to commit criminal acts, conspiracy and
sabotage for having promoted the strike, which sought early elections on
Mr. Chávez's status.
Mr. Fernández was detained immediately and is currently under house arrest,
but Mr. Ortega refused to hand himself in. "They want to kidnap me and
eliminate me," he said at the time.
A diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Mr. Ortega had
called him early on Thursday seeking help in leaving the country.
"He said he had been jumping from house to house and been told, that the
order was not to arrest him but to say he resisted and kill him," the
diplomat said. "Ortega understood the danger and we made overtures to Costa
Rica, which has a long tradition of granting political asylum."
The government refused to comment on the allegations that Mr. Ortega's life
was in danger, saying that it was a judicial matter.

Another US military spy plane downed in Colombia

Less than six weeks after leftist FARC rebels shot down a US spy plane and
captured three CIA agents, another US piloted spy plane goes down over
southern Colombia. All three members of the crew were killed, according to
a spokesman for the Colombian Army.
The US military has suffered yet another setback in their Colombian war.
According to the local Caracol TV channel a US spy plane went down near El
Paujil in Caqueta department on Tuesday evening around 7 p.m., about an
hour after sunset. Caracol reported that an Army spokesperson had confirmed
that the plane went up in flames after crashing and that there were no
survivors.
The crash ocurred in the middle of a traditional stronghold of the
left-wing Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC, a rebel army
fighting for land reforms and an end to corruption. It is suspected that
guerrillas from this rebel army's Teofilo Forero column shot the Cessna 208
plane down, but the US State Department declined to provide further details
on the crash.
Local media, however, reported that the spy plane was participating in a
massive search-and-rescue mission to find three other US intelligence
experts working for the CIA whose plane - also a Cessna 208 - was downed in
rebel territory near the US Larandia base on Feb. 13.
A fourth CIA agent and a Colombian soldier who had been aboard were killed
in a firefight with the rebels after that crash, after which the three
remaining agents surrendered and were taken prisoners by the FARC.
Thousands of Colombian troops, assisted by U.S. intelligence and operations
planners, have since been searching the jungles and mountains of southern
Colombia without succes.
The FARC has offered to release the three captured US agents together with
a number of captured Colombian military officers and high-profile
politicians also held by the insurgents, in exchange for the release of
captured guerrillas. The government of right-wing extremist Alvaro Uribe
has so far rejected the proposal. Instead Uribe has called for increased US
military intervention to assist the government's besieged fores.
The latest casualities take the death toll of US citizens in Colombia's
civil war - whether official US military personel or mercenaries - to 16 in
recent years. It is believed that more than 1.000 US troops are fighting

Colombian Officials: 3 Americans Dead in Plane Crash

Colombian officials say three Americans apparently died when their small
U.S. government plane crashed during a search operation in the southern
Caqueta province.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday rescuers
found the three bodies in the wreckage at the crash site in the town of El
Paujil.
U.S. officials have refused to comment on the fate of the crew, and
authorities are still investigating the cause of the Tuesday night crash.
The Americans were searching the area for three U.S. Department of Defense
contractors captured by rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia, or FARC, on February 13.
The FARC kidnapped the three U.S. nationals when their plane crashed over
suspected coca-growing areas. The two others on board that aircraft, a
fourth American and a Colombian soldier, were found shot to death,
execution-style. The guerrillas have described the hostages as prisoners of
war, and say they will only be freed as part of a broader prisoner exchange
with the Colombian government. Some information for this report provided by

"ZERO HOUR" FOR COLOMBIAN OILWORKERS
A general meeting of Colombian oil workers union USO meeting in
Barrancabermeja decided yesterday, 26 March, to go on strike (text of
resolution follows). After 40 days of negotiations with directors of state
oil corporation ECOPETROL the two sides have not agreed even one article in
the Collective Agreement. The union is due to meet Mines Minister, Luis
Ernesto Mejía this Friday in a last ditch effort to save negotiations. But
USO spokesman Roberto Schmalbach told the press that the union had arrived
at "Zero Hour". USO's executive has been empowered to call a general
stoppage at immediate notice.
The war on Iraq has entered as a factor in an already tense labour
conflict. Colombian president Uribe Velez is an enthusiastic supporter of
the US / UK coalition. He stated last Thursday, 20 March that, "By
participating in this alliance, Colombia strengthens its international
position to obtain allies who will help us defeat internal terrorism".
Within days, on Monday, 24 March George W. Bush asked the US Congress for
$100 million more military aid to Colombia as a reward for Uribe supporting
the war.
In contrast, Colombian oilworkers have been to the fore in anti-war
protests. Also last Thursday, 150 ECOPETROL workers accompanied by union
leaders from the CUT and a number of activists, held a protest outside the
ECOPETROL offices in Bogotá. They sang and chanted against the government s
support for the war in Iraq, against US intervention, for peace in Colombia
and against Chevron-Texaco taking the gas from the La Guajira region in the
north of the country. "US flags were burnt and the traffic held up for a
while, before the workers returned to work" (see

Diego Palacio, Minister for Social Protection, has warned that if the
strike goes ahead it will be declared illegal, since state oil is an
essential service.
The heightened risk for USO members on the brink of a national strike
cannot be overstated. International human rights organisations and
supporters of democracy in Colombia should be on high alert. USO has lost
88 members to assassinations in recent years, and is a constant target for
political persecution. Moreover, like SINTRAEMCALI and workers in other
state sectors such as telecommunications, health and education, it is on
the front line of the latest round of privatisation plans encapsulated in
Uribe's "National Development Plan".

of the general assembly of workers in the Barrancabermeja area, members of

CONSIDERING:
1.) That the government of Álvaro Uribe Vélez, is carrying out IMF policies
to implant a "communitarian state" as the forerunner to our country joining
the Free Trade Area of the Americas, and is taking away the workers rights
by blocking the right to negotiation and collective contracts.
2.) That we the workers, members of USO, presented a Petition of Demands on
28 November 2002, and that the Corporation presented a set of
Counter-Demands with the object of dismantling all the conventional rights
acquired by the workers through 80 years of union struggle.
3.) That the legal terms were exhausted for directly arranging an
extension, that the Corporation's directors have denied the possibility of
negotiating the workers' Petition of Demands, and that by means of
Resolution 0382 of 25 March 2003 the Ministry of Social Protection and the
president of ECOPETROL have provocatively convened an obligatory
Arbritration Tribunal.
4.) That the union does not accept the Arbritration Tribunal in principle
as a means of settling the labour dispute, given that the government has
used this to impose the employer's Counter-Demands, and a reduction of
benefits and collective rights.
5.) That a wave of repression have been unleashed against the union, its
leaders and activists as shown in the assassinations, sackings, detentions,
disappearances, kidnappings, penal cases, disciplinary processes and house
arrests as with our comrade former union president Hernando Hernández,
where the State through the Attorney General and with the help of the
security organisations has implemented a series of frame-ups through false
witnesses to justify his detention withthe prospect of an unjust sentence
in retaliation for his position of unconditional defnce of our oil and
national sovereignty.
6.) That with the help of puppet Alvaro Uribe Vélez, US imperialism has
launched a brutal agression on the Iraqi people in its eagerness to become
master of oil wealth, at the same time obeying the demands of multinational
capital it has launched an offensive against the Colombian working class,
making worse the problems of unemployment, hunger and misery of our people.
RESOLVES:
1.- To reject the Abritration Tribunal, as we have before, because it cuts
and eliminates workers rights and the right to union organisation .
2.- To empower the National Executive to: carry out whatever actions
showing our will for dialogue and direct negotiation with the
adminsitration of ECOPTROL and the national government, to defend ECOPETROL
as a state corporation, to protect the union's stability and to preserve
convention rights.
3.- To maintain our firm decision to develop a general strike in all
ECOPETROL installations, paralysing production. as a legitimate means that
we the workers have to defend our rights.
4.- To call on all demovcratic sectors, union and popular organisations to
protest to teh government and to demand a negotiated solution to the labour
and political conflict in ECOPETROL
5.- To express our rejection of the agression of US imperialism against the
Iraqi people. And to express our solidarity with all sectors in conflict,
especially with the comrades of SINTRAEMCALI, SINTRACAPRECOM (health
insurance) and telecommunications workers.
6.- To demand the immediate release of comrade Hernando Hernández and the
ending of aggression against USO, respect for due process and the granting
of guarantees that allow our comrade to demonstrate his innocence.

PERSECUTION OF SINALTRAINAL LEADERS AND COCA COLA WORKERS IN COLOMBIA
A folded sheet of paper, sealed with a pin in such a way that the symbol of
the "AUTODEFENSAS UNIDAS DE COLOMBIA" (right-wing paramilitaries) was
showing, was left on the second floor at No 14-09 42nd Street, Bucaramanga
- the offices of the local branch of the Food and Beverages Workers Union
SINALTRAINAL, at about 8:00AM on 14th March.
The paper had the following text:
"With the full knowledge of those who live in the city of Bucaramanga, we
have noted how the trade union leadership particpates in various activities
that are against the economy that generates employment in this region. This
is especially so in the case of the Coca Cola union headed by, amongst
others, its president EFRAIN GUERERO who in his public interventions makes
countinual allusions against the AUC and who participates in the formation
of unions attempting to destabilise corporations in Santander department.
Because of the above, and after months of following him, the Autodefensas
Unidas de Colombia see themselves obliged to place a summonse on the cited
individual to abandon the city, or else he will pay with his life for
attacking the image of our organisation and the irresponsibility of the
language who has used on public occasions, specifically in front of the
Coca Cola plant on 22nd January.

19 Statement der Iraqischen Opposition

Der Rat der Iraqischen Opposition, der die wichtigesten Oppositionsgruppen
des Landes umfaßt, hat gestern folgendes Statement herausgebracht:
The Council of the Leadership of the Iraqi Opposition while
appreciating international support, calls upon:
1. All the Iraqi people throughout the country to prepare for an
uprising to liberate the cities and countryside from the grips of
dictatorship. They also call on them to join the banner of the Iraq
Opposition Leadership Council and the patriotic Iraqi Opposition
working under it.
2. The Iraqi Army and all individuals of the Iraqi Armed Forces to
sever their links to the Baghdad regime and to join the Iraqi
Opposition in the following manner:
a. In the South, after forces joining the Iraqi Opposition, the
Leadership of the Opposition will declare this to the Coalition for
them to distinguish between them and regime forces. These forces will
perform their patriotic duty of maintaining the security of citizens,
protect public property and to prevent retribution and chaos.
b. In the North, contact can be made with the liberate areas of
Iraqi Kurdistan to join them and the active Opposition there. These
forces can also move to these liberated areas if it is not possible
for them to remain in their areas.
c. In the Center, forces wanting to join Opposition forces can do
so by declaring this to the Council of the Leadership of the Iraqi
Opposition in order to coordinate with them.
The Iraqi Armed Forces, by joining the ranks of the Council of
Leadership of the Iraqi Opposition will follow its orders and
instructions, therefore rejecting all orders of the brutal Baghdad
regime.
3. All Iraqi embassies and Iraqi diplomatic representations outside
Iraq, to declare their separation from the Baghdad regime and to join
the ranks of the Iraqi Opposition and the institutions extending from
it.
The Council of the Leadership of the Iraqi Opposition also states
that:
4. Upon the liberation of Iraq, the Leadership Council will declare
the formation of an independent provisional government that will be a
coalition to run the affairs of the country, to uphold the dignity of
the people, the unity and national sovereignty and independence of
the country. This government will include political personalities
with experience who have a history of patriotic struggle and
competence and with loyalty to Iraq, including those inside Saddam
occupied areas now. Among the duties of this government will be
negotiation and dialogue with the coalition and the United Nations to
uncover all Weapons of Mass Destruction, destroy and eliminate them
and to put in place a time line for the withdrawal of Coalition
forces from Iraq.
5. The transitional national assembly will be formed from the
follow-up and coordination committee of the Iraqi Opposition and from
the representatives of parties, groups and figures not represented
within the committee, as well as patriotic and democratic figures
inside the country. Its task will be legislative during the
transitional period. It will supervise the independent provisional
coalition government according to the principles of the statements of
the London Conference (December 2002) and the Final Statement of the
Salahuddin Conference (March 2003).
6. The Council of the Leadership of the Iraqi Opposition will seek
help from the United Nations, neighboring nations, the Coalition and
all nations of the world to lift the sanctions from Iraq, alleviate
principle and interest of debts incurred by Saddam, and to offer
economic, technological and scientific assistance to Iraq for its
development.
7. The Council of the Leadership of the Iraqi Opposition will build
a democratic, liberated civil society respecting muslim values. It
will also rebuild the Armed Forces and state structures on a modern
and democratic basis, far from racial, ethnic, sectarian and
political discrimination.

Über einige Proponenten eines Kongresses "gegen Krieg und Embargo" in Wien

Die Antiimperialistischen Koordination (AIK) kündigt für den 28. Und 29.
März einen "Kongress gegen Krieg und Embargo" an. An diesem nehmen auch
einige durchaus honorige Intellektuelle teil. Doch haben wahrscheinlich
einige nicht vorher die Liste der Proponenten angeschaut.

Unter den Proponenten finden wir u.a. die frühere Maoistin Univ.Prof. Dr.
Andrea Komlosy, die in der "Presse" am 27.7.2002 einen Artikel
veröffentlichte, in dem sie in einer "Sachverhaltsdarstellung" u.a.
feststellte: "Für Deutschland und Österreich brachte die "Auslagerung der
Judenfrage" nach Palästina innenpolitische Entspannung, für die Juden ein
unlösbares Dauerproblem."
Die am Wiener Universitätsinstitut für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte
lehrende Komlosy beklagte, dass der Plan zur Liquidierung des Staates
Israel von den deutschen Staaten nicht angenommen wurde:
"Nach der Zerschlagung und der Ausweisung der palästinensischen
Organisationen aus Jordanien im September 1970 ist ein solcher Plan vom
Berliner Philosophen Wolfgang Harich ausgearbeitet worden. Harich siedelte
einen möglichen Judenstaat, den er als deutsch-deutschen Beitrag zur
Überwindung des Nahostkonflikts vorschlug, an der Ostseeküste an,
beiderseits der ohnedies weitgehend entvölkerten Zonengrenze. Doch Harichs
"Judenstaat" paßte weder in das in der BRD noch in das in der DDR
vorherrschende Verständnis von Antifaschismus. Der Vorschlag "Jerusalem
nach Lübeck" zirkulierte lediglich als informelle Kopie."
Komlosy bewies damit ihre Ignoranz, denn natürlich war die Ostseeküste 1970
nicht weitgehend entvölkert, aber das wäre gar nicht das wichtigste
Argument gegen diese ethnische Säuberung gewesen, sondern eben die Frage,
ob denn die jüdischen Israeli den Wunsch gehabt hätten, ihr Land zu
verlassen.
Nicht fehlen darf in der Reihe der Proponenten Fritz Edlinger,
Generalsekretär der Gesellschaft für Österreichisch-Arabische Beziehungen.
Dieser schrieb als sozialistischer Funktionär im Herbst 1982 an die
Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien einen Brief, der so auch von einem
"Ewiggestrigen" hätte geschrieben werden können. Ihm waren nicht nur die
ohnehin spärlich fließenden "Wiedergutmachungs"-Zahlungen ein Dorn im Auge,
sondern er verstand es auch, die österreichischen Juden und Jüdinnen in
altbekannter Manier vom österreichischen Wir-Kollektiv abzugrenzen und
ihnen subtil die Instrumentalisierung der Schoa für politische Zwecke zu

An zweiter Stelle der Proponenten steht Univ. Prof. Dr. Hans Köchler, vom
Philosophie-Institut der Universität Innsbruck. In einem an Dr. Farish Noor
gerichteten offenen Brief vom 12. Februar 2000 schrieb Köchler: "The
Muslims of Austria strongly condemn the present anti-Austrian campaign in
some EU countries such as France, and in Israel... The tone of your article
is very much in line with the politics of the "Socialist International"
presently headed by the Portuguese Socialist party... What you write about
the Freedom Party is mainly hearsay and far from correct."
Köchler drohte auch: "If JUST continues to propagate views that are more in
conformity with the establishment circles of the former colonial powers in
the region and with pro-Israeli groups than with the aspirations of the
common people of Europe, I do not see the point to continue my co-operation
as a member."

Prof. Köchler ist nicht nur ein Verteidiger der FPÖ und von Kurt Waldheim,
er unterstützte den Aufruf von Helga Zepp-LaRouche in der Neuen Solidarität
Nr. 44/98; "Präsident Clinton müsse Lyndon LaRouche zu seinem
Wirtschaftsberater berufen, wenn ein weltweiter Finanzkrach mit
unabsehbaren folgen verhindert werden soll." In einer Presseerklärung
drückte "der Präsident der International Progress Organization (IPO), Prof.
Dr. Hans Köchler" seine Zustimmung aus.

In der vom Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Jugend und Familie herausgegebenen
Sektenbroschüre, wird die Partei der Helga Zepp-LaRouche Europäische
Arbeiterpartei eindeutig als rechtsextrem qualifiziert.
"Die von antisemitischen und autoritären Gedankengut durchdrungene
Programmatik der LaRouche-Parteien erscheint als ein willkürliches Gemenge
aus Theorien von auch linken Philosophen, Schriftstellern und
Sozialwissenschaftlern. Ein bekanntes Zitat von Lyndon H. LaRouche, den
Prof. Köchler als Wirtschaftsberater von Präsident Clinton sehen wollte:
"Es ist nicht notwendig, braune Hemden zu tragen, um ein Faschist zu sein
(...) Es ist nicht notwendig, ein Hakenkreuz zu tragen, um ein Faschist zu
sein (...) Es ist nicht notwendig sich selbst Faschist zu nennen, um ein
Faschist zu sein. Es ist einfach nur notwendig, einer zu sein!" (Handbuch

Das Bedürfnis, gegen einen Krieg aufzutreten, sollte Demokraten nicht von
der Verpflichtung entbinden, zu überprüfen, mit wem man gemeinsam auftritt.================================================

Auf dem Marienplatz in München steht ein Zelt. Im Zelt wird Material
angeboten und Tische und Bänke, um zu diskutieren. Die Betreiber des Zeltes
wollen eine permanente Aktion gegen den Krieg am Golf durchführen.
Betreiber sind Gruppen wie Attac, DKP, Linksruck und diverse
Friedensinitativen. Das Zelt ist nach außen mit Parolen wie "Kein Blut für
Öl", "Kein Krieg" oder "Stoppt den Krieg" versehen. Im Zelt und auf dem
Marienplatz sitzen viele Schüler und zeichnen für den Frieden.
Debatten
Auf dem Platz tummeln sich neben Touristen altbekannte Berufsdiskutanten,
vor allem aus dem braunen und nazistischen Lager. Lautstark wird die
Propaganda der "Linken" wiederholt und auf die Amerikaner und Zionisten
eingedroschen. Die älteren Jahrgänge aus DKP und Linksruck lassen sie
ungehindert gewähren. Vielleicht auch deshalb weil die Parolen
oberflächlich betrachtet gleich sind.
Ständig wird vom amerikanischen Kapital und seinen schnöden
Profitinteressen gesprochen. Wer auf das deutsche Kapital und seine
Giftgasgeschäfte mit Saddam verweist, wird von den getarnten Nazis und den
offenen Nazis sofort als zionistischer Agent attackiert. Oft wird dann die
Sau herausgelassen und vom jüdischen Kapital sowie der dominierenden Rolle
des "Weltjudentums" gelabert. Diese Leute haben rund um das Zelt am
Marienplatz die verbale Lufthoheit, während im Zelt Leute von Attac und DKP
ihre Theorien über den globalisierten Kapitalismus zum Besten geben.
Menschen jüdischer Abstammung die sich in den Diskussionsrunden vor dem
Zelt zu Wort melden wird sofort von den versammelten faschistischen
Berufsdiskutierern das Wort abgeschnitten. Sie werden bedroht und grob
attackiert. Die Leute im Zelt scheint das entweder nicht zu kümmern oder
sie betrachten sich selbst als Vorhut einer angeblich nur fortschrittlichen
Bewegung. Dieses Wunschdenken, sowie die oberflächliche Analyse des Krieges
gegen den Irak, macht blind gegenüber Nationalismus und Antisemitismus.
Eine reale Erfahrung
Die Attacken gegen Juden ist keine Erfindung. Vor den antisemitischen
Ausfällen am Marienplatz stritten sich drei deutsche Juden, die sich in dem
unangenehmen Umfeld als solche zu Erkennen gaben, über das momentane
Kriegsgeschehen. Der eine war offen für Bush, der andere sowohl gegen Bush
als auch gegen Saddam und ebenso gegen die Politik der deutschen
Bundesregierung, der dritte konnte sich nicht recht festlegen. Danach
wurden alle drei offen antisemitisch angegriffen. Der Nazimob vor dem Zelt
schrie auf alle drei ein und machte sie zum Bestandteil einer "miesen
zionistischen Lobby". Auch körperlich wurden die drei bedroht. Ein
hinzukommender bürgerlich-deutscher Mittelstandstyp beteiligte sich
umgehend an den verbalen Angriffen auf die drei. Es wurde über Friedman und
Sharon antisemitisch hergezogen und dem "tapferen" deutschen Recken
Möllemann gehuldigt.
Im Café
Nach dieser Erfahrung eilten die drei deutschen Juden in das nächste
Kaffeehaus, um über die Ereignisse zu sprechen. Dabei tauchte die Frage
auf, warum diese Friedensbewegung Nazis und Antisemiten anzieht. Als
Ergebnis wurde festgehalten:
1. In weiten Teilen der Friedensbewegung wird nur der Krieg der USA
verurteilt.
2. Viele kritisieren nicht das Saddam-Regime, dessen Verbrechen wurden und
werden ignoriert.
3. Die deutsche Militärpolitik mit ihrer neuen offensiven Umrüstung zur
weltweit operierenden Eingreiftruppe wird von vielen nicht wahrgenommen.
Es gibt demzufolge in Teilen der Friedensbewegung einen deutschnationalen
Kurs der mit einem kruden "Antiimperialismus" und Antizionismus unterlegt
ist.

Im letzten Leitartikel / Format 13/03 behauptet Herr Ortner, dass die
"Baath–Partei eine Gründung irakischer Nationalisten sei, die angeblich
Adolf Hitler verehrten".
Ohne auch nur ansatzweise als Verteidiger dieser Partei auftreten zu wollen
muss ich korrigierend eingreifen.
Erstens gibt es keine einzige Gründungsfigur der Baath-Partei die aus dem
Irak stammt. Der Hauptgründer der Baath ist der christliche Syrer Michel
AFLAK. Er hatte in Paris studiert und rief mit einigen seiner
Gesinnungsgenossen (z.B. Salah al-Din BITAR, ebenfalls Syrer) die Baath 1941
als Partei ins Leben. Beide wurden 1966 von den Militärmachthabern aus
Syrien verwiesen. Michel AFLAK lebte danach im Irak, ohne je ein politisches
Amt zu bekleiden. Al Bitar lebte als Oppositioneller in Paris und wurde dort
dem Vernehmen nach durch den syrischen Geheimdienst hingerichtet.
Zweitens lässt sich in den Schriften der Baath– Ideologen nirgends eine
positive Einstellung gegenüber Hitler oder Nationalsozialismus erkennen. Das
gleiche gilt auch für die moderneren Schriften, die von Säkularismus und
Panarabismus geprägt sind.
Nationalsozialismus ist an sich eine verbrecherische Ideologie. Die
propagierten Vergleiche sind nicht nur eine gefährliche
Pseudo –Kriegslegitimierung, sondern auch eine glatte Verharmlosung
nationalsozialistischen Gedankenguts.
Herr Ortner möge die Beweise für seine Behauptungen liefern, ansonsten
bleibt die Frage offen, was für ein FORMAT ein Medium habe, durch das
nachweislich falsche und kriegsdienende Informationen in den Leitartikeln
verbreitet werden.

27 March 2003It was an outrage, an obscenity. The severed hand on the metal door, the
swamp of blood and mud across the road, the human brains inside a garage,
the incinerated, skeletal remains of an Iraqi mother and her three small
children in their still-smouldering car.
Two missiles from an American jet killed them all by my estimate, more than
20 Iraqi civilians, torn to pieces before they could be 'liberated' by the
nation that destroyed their lives. Who dares, I ask myself, to call this
'collateral damage'? Abu Taleb Street was packed with pedestrians and
motorists when the American pilot approached through the dense sandstorm
that covered northern Baghdad in a cloak of red and yellow dust and rain
yesterday morning.
It's a dirt-poor neighbourhood, of mostly Shia Muslims, the same people
whom Messrs Bush and Blair still fondly hope will rise up against President
Saddam Hussein, a place of oil-sodden car-repair shops, overcrowded
apartments and cheap cafés. Everyone I spoke to heard the plane. One man,
so shocked by the headless corpses he had just seen, could say only two
words. "Roar, flash," he kept saying and then closed his eyes so tight that
the muscles rippled between them.
How should one record so terrible an event? Perhaps a medical report would
be more appropriate. But the final death toll is expected to be near to 30
and Iraqis are now witnessing these awful things each day; so there is no
reason why the truth, all the truth, of what they see should not be told.
For another question occurred to me as I walked through this place of
massacre yesterday. If this is what we are seeing in Baghdad, what is
happening in Basra and Nasiriyah and Kerbala? How many civilians are dying
there too, anonymously, indeed unrecorded, because there are no reporters
to be witness to their suffering?
Abu Hassan and Malek Hammoud were preparing lunch for customers at the
Nasser restaurant on the north side of Abu Taleb Street. The missile that
killed them landed next to the westbound carriageway, its blast tearing
away the front of the café and cutting the two men the first 48, the second
only 18 to pieces. A fellow worker led me through the rubble. "This is all
that is left of them now," he said, holding out before me an oven pan
dripping with blood.
At least 15 cars burst into flames, burning many of their occupants to
death. Several men tore desperately at the doors of another flame-shrouded
car in the centre of the street that had been flipped upside down by the
same missile. They were forced to watch helplessly as the woman and her
three children inside were cremated alive in front of them. The second
missile hit neatly on the eastbound carriageway, sending shards of metal
into three men standing outside a concrete apartment block with the words,
"This is God's possession" written in marble on the outside wall.
The building's manager, Hishem Danoon, ran to the doorway as soon as he
heard the massive explosion. "I found Ta'ar in pieces over there," he told
me. His head was blown off. "That's his hand." A group of young men and a
woman took me into the street and there, a scene from any horror film, was
Ta'ar's hand, cut off at the wrist, his four fingers and thumb grasping a
piece of iron roofing. His young colleague, Sermed, died the same instant.
His brains lay piled a few feet away, a pale red and grey mess behind a
burnt car. Both men worked for Danoon. So did a doorman who was also killed.
As each survivor talked, the dead regained their identities. There was the
electrical shop-owner killed behind his counter by the same missile that
cut down Ta'ar and Sermed and the doorman, and the young girl standing on
the central reservation, trying to cross the road, and the truck driver who
was only feet from the point of impact and the beggar who regularly called
to see Mr Danoon for bread and who was just leaving when the missiles came
screaming through the sandstorm to destroy him.
In Qatar, the Anglo-American forces let's forget this nonsense about
"coalition" announced an inquiry. The Iraqi government, who are the only
ones to benefit from the propaganda value of such a bloodbath, naturally
denounced the slaughter, which they initially put at 14 dead. So what was
the real target? Some Iraqis said there was a military encampment less than
a mile from the street, though I couldn't find it. Others talked about a
local fire brigade headquarters, but the fire brigade can hardly be
described as a military target.
Certainly, there had been an attack less than an hour earlier on a military
camp further north. I was driving past the base when two rockets exploded
and I saw Iraqi soldiers running for their lives out of the gates and along
the side of the highway. Then I heard two more explosions; these were the
missiles that hit Abu Taleb Street.
Of course, the pilot who killed the innocent yesterday could not see his
victims. Pilots fire through computer-aligned co-ordinates, and the
sandstorm would have hidden the street from his vision. But when one of
Malek Hammoud's friends asked me how the Americans could so blithely kill
those they claimed to want to liberate, he didn't want to learn about the
science of avionics or weapons delivery systems.
And why should he? For this is happening almost every day in Baghdad. Three
days ago, an entire family of nine was wiped out in their home near the
centre of the city. A busload of civilian passengers were reportedly killed
on a road south of Baghdad two days ago. Only yesterday were Iraqis
learning the identity of five civilian passengers slaughtered on a Syrian
bus that was attacked by American aircraft close to the Iraqi border at the
weekend.
The truth is that nowhere is safe in Baghdad, and as the Americans and
British close their siege in the next few days or hours, that simple
message will become ever more real and ever more bloody.
We may put on the hairshirt of morality in explaining why these people
should die. They died because of 11 September, we may say, because of
President Saddam's "weapons of mass destruction", because of human rights
abuses, because of our desperate desire to "liberate" them all. Let us not
confuse the issue with oil. Either way, I'll bet we are told President
Saddam is ultimately responsible for their deaths. We shan't mention the
pilot, of course.

Zu den persönlichen disqualifizierenden Angriffen von Karl Pfeiffer gehe
ich nur
in Hinblick auf die von ihm usprünglich in das Widerstandsforum
hineingestellte
Geschichte des "dummen Human Shield" ein.
Es ist wahrscheinlich schwer zu beweisen, aber viele Details der
Geschichte
sprechen einfach dafür, dass sie frei erfunden ist.
Wer geht schon in den Irak, um sich zu wundern, dass es dort überall
Saddam-Bilder gibt und nimmt GERADE DAS zum Anlass, auf dann Distanz zu
gehen.
Wenn hier also vorausgesetzt wird, dass es offenbaar jemanden gab, der
als
"human shield" hingefahren ist, um Saddam oder das Regime zu bejahen,
nicht aber
um unschuldige Menschen zu schützen, dann ist diese ganze Annahme
ohnehin schon
so unrealistisch, dass auch der Rest der ganzen Geschichte nicht
glaubwürdig
ist.
Wer spricht schon mit einem Taxifahrer, der einem so einfach sagt, hören
Sie
doch was Powell in Voice of America sagt (eh kloa ...) und glaubt das
dann auch so?
Am meisten jedoch entspricht die Geschichte den Grundstrukturen des
christilich.fundamentalistischen
Denkens, nämlich der Kategorie des plötzlichen eschatologischen
Bekehrungserlebnisses. So läuft die Missions-Bibelpropaganda auf
übelster
Schiene. Ein Dummian lebt also verblendet, plötzlich sieht er den Teufel
(hier
Saddam), plötzlich hört er die Stimme des Herrn (hier Powell) und dann
ist er
auf einmal am rechten Weg, und das soger ohne Zweifel, sondern
hundertprozentig
geläutert. Das ist ein Schema, das einfach in einem grossen Teil der
amerikanischen Gesellschaft drinnen sitzt, das also wäre noch mein
endgültiger
Kommentar zu
dem Geschichtchen. Vielen sagen wir mal "einfacheren" Amerikanern fällt
es gar
nicht auf, dass das von einem Aussenstehenden einfach als dumm empfunden
wird.
Ich kenne aus dem lateinamerikanischen Raum viele bebilderte Heftchen,
wo mit
solchen Geschichten Missionspropaganda, aber auch politsche Propaganda,
etwa für
die Regierung Kolumbiens, betrieben wird.
Auf die übrigen - wie gesagt persönlich disqualifizierenden -
Ausführungen von
Pfeiffer gehe ich nicht näher ein.
Niemand von den Friedensaktivisten hat es notwendig, sich persönlich
angreifen
und disqualifizieren zu lassen. Personen, die mit rhetorischen Fragen
unterstellen wollen, dass irgend jemand anderer etwas bestimmtes denkt
oder
meint, was er niemals zum Ausdruck gebracht hat, haben Probleme mit
ihren
eigenen Projektionen und ihrer eigenen Wahrnehmungsfähigket. Ich
wiederhole,
niemand hat es nötig, sich für ein Engagement, das einen
völkerrechtswidrigen und
verbrecherischen Krieg bedingungslos ablehnt, von einem Herrn Pfeiffer
oder
sonst jemand persönlich angreifen zu lassen.
