02 Nochmal Augustin
From: augustin <augustin@nextra.at>
================================================
Stadtgespräch
AUGUSTIN:
In
Guten.
Weil A. nicht
Soweit also Rottenberg O-Ton.
in
seinem tristen Dasein zuzusprechen.
selbstauserkorenen "Peinigern" meiner vermeintlich edlen, in Wahrheit
nur qualvollen Alltäglichkeit öffentlich abzurechnen - dafür,
Herr

Fordern Sie endlich Neuwahlen!

04 BELLS CAMPAIGN
From: Abraham J. Bonowitz <abe@cuadp.org>

& Tollbells lists.
Feel free to forward
Hello all,
I received the
following testimonial regarding the "For Whom The
Bells Toll" Campaign which I suspect many will appreciate. It's a little
long, but I elected not to edit it in order to keep the full flavor. For
more information on the "Bells" Campaign, please visit
<http://www.curenational.org/~bells/>. Please note that the "Bells"
campaign is not limited to Christians.
There is also some interesting commentary on Ramadan.
But first, I also
wanted to share the following parable which has
many applications:
A Native American
grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt
about the tragedy on Sept 11th.
He said, "I
feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is
the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving,
compassionate one."
The grandson asked
him, "Which wolf will win the fight in your heart,
Grandpa?"
The grandfather answered, "The one I feed."
Have a nice weekend.

*******
Dear Abe,
Thank you for keeping me on your informative e-mail list.
I especially appreciated
the news about "The Wrong Man", which I intend to
order soon. I met Sam Reese Sheppard at an anti-death-penalty conference
in San Francisco a few years ago, and he kindly agreed to speak with a
friend of mine whose step-dad had been murdered when she was 12. She
believed that the wrong man was convicted of that crime. (As it turned out
she shied away from calling Mr. Sheppard, but I'll always be grateful for
his offer.)
Aside from that,
my purpose in writing is two-fold: I wanted to share with
you that another church is hanging a black drape on days of executions, and
I hope to promote fasting for Ramadan as a means to solidarity with our
Muslim sisters and brothers, especially the Afghan refugees.
In spite of my
Italian surname, and in spite of the fact that three of my
grandparents were born Catholic, and two remained that way, I was baptized
and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church (my mother's faith). Nowadays,
however, I participate in the small faith group and the peace and justice /
Pax Christi group of Our Lady of Grace (Catholic) Church where I live in
Castro Valley (not far from Oakland and Berkeley). This is my girlfriend's
parish. She was instrumental in getting that peace and justice group
affiliated with Pax Christi (which I recently joined).
Dennie's pastor
was not at all adverse to marking execution days, but he
said he wasn't sure where the switches are that ring the bells, as they
never use them. We all agreed that hanging a black drape would mean a lot
more than ringing bells, anyway. Dennie (who I believe can sew anything)
fashioned a drape with a wooden rod at the bottom to weigh it down, and she
fastened in the middle a plastic sheet protector, into which we slide a
page with the names of the condemned, the states that intend to kill them,
and the execution dates. There is also text suggesting that we pray for
the condemned, their families and friends, and all victims of crime and
violence. This began last month, along with blurbs in the church's
bulletins. Already many have been struck by the frequency of the grim
reaper's activity. It's my turn to remove the drape from one of the front
doors tomorrow on the way to work. (We've found that using a package
sealing tape dispenser, a door stop, and a step stool make the job easy for
one person to do.)
********************
For a few weeks
I tried to think what I could do in response to this
country's attack on Afghanistan. My 1991 Ford Escort that was plastered
with peace symbols and home-made signs like: "Peace Is Patriotic; War Is
Idiotic", "Afghanistan Is Not To Blame" (with an Afghan flag),
"End U.S.
Terrorism", and "Visualize Democracy", was stolen from my carport
the night
of October 10th and turned up burnt to a crisp the next day in a nearby
industrial park. The next day I put similar signs on the rental car that
my insurance provided. However, before jeopardizing my "new" 1993
Subaru
wagon--at least until I get a remote (beeper) burglar alarm installed--I
got the idea for a better response.
On Monday, October
15th, around 3:30 AM I suddenly awoke with the idea that
I was supposed to fast for Ramadan, send what I saved on my usual lunches
out to a relief agency, and urge other non-Muslims to do the same. The
words "Friends of Ramadan" came to me, not as a name for a new organization
with a membership list and officers, but as a name for an action to be
joined to whatever degree by anyone who was so moved. It was a couple of
weeks before I learned that the progressive Catholic magazine (& e-zine)
"Sojourners" had promoted this idea during the Gulf War ten years
earlier
and was suggesting it again. (I wouldn't be surprised if many folks
independently hit upon the same idea.)
In the meantime
I spoke with a (Tajik speaking) waitress at Salang Pass
Afghan restaurant in Fremont's "Little Kabul" neighborhood, asking
her
whether anything in this might offend Muslims. She liked the idea. I then
asked two men in the combination Afghan bakery-and-import-store, and they
seemed surprised that I might think it could offend anyone, as Muslims have
a principle of not interfering with the religious practices of others.
However, at the same time, they didn't exclaim, "What a wonderful idea!"
They informed me that Ramadan is a time for practicing self-discipline.
When I remarked on the coincidence this year of Ramadan and the onset of
the bitter winter cold that the refugees are facing, they said that their
people are used to it. It's only that this time around that western news
is paying some attention. (How can one get used to freezing to death?
Kabul hit -24° in January, and the highest mountains in the country are
around 25,000 feet above sea level, not much less than Mt. Everest.)
I called the Islamic
Speakers' Bureau in Santa Clara County. Two women
there seemed very touched by the idea. One echoed the Afghan-american's
idea of discipline. She thinks of Ramadan as "basic training for the rest
of the year" in which one learns not only to control hunger and thirst,
but
other urges, like wanting to snap back at someone with an angry answer,
etc.
That aspect will
be the real challenge for me. As a graduate of Werner
Erhard's est training in 1983, I know that I can go without eating,
drinking, speaking, moving, using the bathroom, etc. for a long time with
no problem (and that knowledge was just a side benefit of that program).
Among the acts that render Ramadan fasting invalid is speaking ill of
someone behind his back. I'll have a tough time with that with respect to
Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rumsfeld, Negroponti, and company, but that's my
intention. Hell; it's only a month!. In "National Brotherhood Week"
Tom
Lehrer sang, "Be thankful it just comes but once a year!"
Finally I spoke
with an Imam in Fremont, CA, who said that no Muslim could
take offense, and who seemed quite moved by "my" idea. He said he
would
like to meet me. I said I'd like to see whether I could find any
non-Muslim who'd join with me in this action, and then maybe we'd all meet.
That's how we left it.
If any of this
interests you, here is some info. beginning with an article
from Sojourner's e-mail to me today:
(Please forgive
me if I'm telling you what you already knew a long time
before me, OK?)

Ramadan
by Jim Wallis
I've decided to
fast during Ramadan. Sojourners has also
called for a halt to the bombing during the Muslim holy
season, and to focus instead on feeding the millions of
people in Afghanistan who face starvation this winter.
But that's not why I'm fasting. The reason I'm going to
fast is because I need to. I need the period of prayer,
fasting, and reflection that Ramadan offers. First, I
need the prayerful, focused rest that Ramadan suggests.
Like many others, I have hardly gotten a decent night's
sleep since September 11 - both from overwork and from
worry.
And I do worry
about a lot these days. I worry about a
bombing campaign that just recruits more terrorists,
that turns away millions of peaceful Muslims we will
need to defeat violent Islam, and an American war in the
Arab world that could easily spin out of control into
an endless cycle of violence. But I also worry about
more terrorist attacks, and I worry that my family
lives on a very valuable target. Last night, my wife
and I discussed what we should take with us if we have
to quickly evacuate Washington D.C.
I'm doing my best
to offer the public debate better
ways to defeat terrorism but, to be both honest and
humble, I know I don't have all the answers. Prayer
helps me remember how much I need God.
This week, I met
with church leaders from Lebanon,
Pakistan, Palestine, Indonesia, Russia, France, and
South Africa who were visiting the U.S. They were worried
too - about what they were hearing from American
Christians, about what a growing conflict between the
Christian West and Islam would do to their situations,
about going to the root causes of terrorist violence
but, at the same time, finding real short-term
strategies for stopping it. I think we all agreed that
we need more prayer.
Prayer can change
things because it changes us. Prayer
can alter our perspective and point of view - helping
us to look at things in different and deeper ways.
During the Gulf war, I undertook a Lenten fast that
lasted 47 days. Nothing else I did during that period
made such an impact on my thinking and my spirit. It
also brought me a peace during war that I couldn't
understand, but was deeply grateful for. Prayer also
helped me locate the causes of war within my own heart
and life.
So I am going to
fast and pray during Ramadan because
I need it. I suspect many of us will at Sojourners,
perhaps in different ways. Maybe you'd like to join us.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
On Wednesday, the
Washington Post published an op-ed piece
by Jim Wallis highlighting three crucial points: the
importance of humanitarian aid, preventing a wider war,
and that stopping terrorism is fundamentally not a
military issue.

05 Both Economic Plans Favor Big Business,
From: Arbeitsgemeinschaft Die Frauen & Der Krieg <arge.frauen@lion.cc>
================================================
NOW Press Office
202-628-8669 Rebecca Farmer, x 116
202-785-8576 (fax)
Both Economic Plans
Favor Big Business,
Republicans and Democrats Turn Their Backs on Workers
Statement of NOW President Kim Gandy
November 16, 2001
While the House
and Senate haggle over how much money to dole out
to big business in the name of economic stimulus, more than 600,000
people have lost their jobs in the wake of September 11 terrorism and
the worsening recession. Instead of decisive action to help displaced
workers and spur the economy, the bill passed by the House of
Representatives hands out billions of dollars in corporate welfare. And
Senate Republicans are blocking a Democratic plan that does offer
some help to low-wage and laid-off workers, but still packs in the
economic pork.
The travel and
tourism industries have been hit hard, and among the
most seriously affected are women in state Welfare-to-Work programs
who were trained in large numbers for work in the hotel industry. These
women, the sole support of their families, have been laid off in huge
numbers -- but neither party's plan addresses this urgent concern.
What happens to
one of these women when she is laid off? What does
she find waiting for her at home? Will she receive the unemployment
benefits that her co-workers get? Will she be forced to reapply for
welfare assistance, or will her 5-year clock run out? Tick. Tick. Tick.
Every tick of that cruel clock bringing her and her children closer to
despair, and not a job in sight. Only the Congress can stop the clock --
and stop this heartless threat to poor families -- as long as we are in
this recession. Furthermore, many women who are still receiving
welfare assistance have been unable to find jobs -- they, too, cannot
reasonably be held to a time limit that is set to expire, when there
simply are no jobs to be found.
The Senate must
create a plan to help both the people and the economy
-- not just big business. This includes reforming unemployment insurance
to include more workers, especially part-time workers, extending benefits
and giving them directly to the unemployed (not block-granting to the
states, creating another level of bureaucracy), ensuring health benefits for
the unemployed, stopping the welfare time clock, and rejecting any tax
breaks for corporations that are not directly tied to new investments and
job creation.
If Congress wants
to stimulate spending, then it needs to get money into
the hands of low-income and laid-off workers who, by necessity, will put
it right back into the economy -- while feeding their families. Economic
pork is the wrong answer for our ailing economy.

06 RAWA OPPOSITION TO NORTHERN ALLIANCE

From: mikemarqusee@aol.com
Subject: STATEMENT: RAWA OPPOSITION TO NORTHERN ALLIANCE
RAWA (Afghanistan) www.rawa.org The people of Afghanistan do not
accept domination of the Northern Alliance! Now it is confirmed that the
Taliban have left Kabul and the Northern Alliance has entered the city.
The world should understand that the Northern Alliance is composed of
some bands who did show their real criminal and inhuman nature when
they were ruling Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996.
The retreat of the terrorist Taliban from Kabul is a positive development,
but entering of the rapist and looter NA in the city is nothing but a
dreadful
and shocking news for about 2 million residents of Kabul whose wounds of
the years 1992-96 have not healed yet.
Thousands of people who fled Kabul during the past two months were saying
that they feared coming to power of the NA in Kabul much more than being
scared by the US bombing.
The Taliban and Al-Qaeda will be eliminated, but the existence of the NA as
a military force would shatter the joyful dream of the majority for an
Afghanistan free from the odious chains of barbaric Taliban. The NA will
horribly intensify the ethnic and religious conflicts and will never refrain
to fan
the fire of another brutal and endless civil war in order to retain in
power.
The terrible news of looting and inhuman massacre of the captured Taliban
or their foreign accomplices in Mazar-e-Sharif in past few days speaks for
itself.
Though the NA has learned how to pose sometimes before the West as
"democratic" and even supporter of women's rights, but in fact they
have
not at all changed, as a leopard cannot change its spots.
RAWA has already documented heinous crimes of the NA. Time is running
out. RAWA on its own part appeals to the UN and world community as a
whole to pay urgent and considerable heed to the recent developments in our
ill-fated Afghanistan before it is too late.
We would like to emphatically ask the UN to send its effective peace-keeping
force into the country before the NA can repeat the unforgettable crimes
they
committed in the said years.
The UN should withdraw its recognition to the so-called Islamic government
headed by Rabbani and help the establishment of a broad-based government
based on the democratic values.
RAWA's call stems from the aspirations of the vast majority of the people of
Afghanistan.
