(en) Fence around detention center dismanteled
Sunday afternoon, 24th of Aug. 2003, some 60 activists have dismantled
the fence around a center for minor unaccompanied asylum seekers in Dutch
province of Gelderland. The center is one of two locations where the Netherlands
are trying out a new approach towards young asylum seekers.
The centers
are supposed to provide 'simple but humane spaces' wherein the asylum
seekers can are 'prepared for return and deportation'. In practice this
means that the minors are kept isolated from the rest of society and are
subjected to a strict regime based on punishments and rewards. Over the
course of the year the detainees in both centers have repeatedly rebelled
against their treatment. During Sundays actions the detained refugees
first cheered at he activists before starting to help them with dismantling
the fences
(see pictures).
After having dismantled the entire fence the activists stopped their symbolic
action and left the scene.

Am Sonntag, 24. August 2003 demontierten 60 AktivistInnen in der holländischen
Provinz Gelderland den Zaun eines Internierungslagers für Flüchtlinge. Dieses
Center ist eines jener zwei Orte, an denen die Niederlande neue Methoden gegen
jugendliche AsylwerberInnen testen. Diese Lager seien "einfache, aber menschliche
Orte", in denen die AsylwerberInnen auf ihre Deportation und Rückkehr vorbereitet"
werden können. Dies heisst in der Praxis, dass die Gruppe der Minderjährigen vom
Rest der Gesellschaft isoliert und einem strengen System unterliegen, das auf
Strafen und Belohnungen basiert. Im Laufe des Jahres haben die InsassInnen beider
Lager wiederholt gegen ihre Behandlung rebelliert. Während der Aktivitäten am
24. August jubelten die Flüchtlinge erst den AktivistInnen zu und beteiligten sich
dann tatkräftig an der Entzäunung

Nach dem vollständigen Entfernen des Zaunes beendeten die AktivistInnen ihre
symbolische Aktion und verliessen den Schauplatz.
