Report from demonstration against racism and police violence

On Friday, 9 June 2006 at 4 p.m. 400-500 people gathered in Vienna to protest against institutionalized racism and police violence.

The demonstration went from Westbahnhof to the closed detention center and lasted about 4 hours - many people left it before arriving at the deportation center, but some people choined spontaneously, when the demonstrators were passing by.

About 1000 flyers were distributed - mainly during the first part of the demonstration, on Mariahilfer Straße, the biggest shopping street in Vienna. The main claims were to stop deportations, Schubhaft, etc. The information material handed out had also a clear focus on police violence. The reactions of the viewers differed, there were many positive reactions, but also rascist outbreaks. Police - against which was being demonstrated as well, was present in uniform and without, but remained calm.

After the demonstration lots of people gathered in Stadtpark for the final speeches, etc., but in the end there was djing (music) and a qualm sit-in after the long day.

Friday, 16 June 2006 at 19.00 there will be a meeting at EKH (Wielandgasse 2-4, 1100 Wien) to discuss on-going events in order to keep on bringing up for discussion racism in Austria.
