Protest and solidarity day with asylum seekers at the Debrecen Refugee Camp in Hungary on 17th of May 2014.
Since June 2013, detention of asylum seekers is legal in Hungary. This means that people forced to flee from their home country are often jailed when they arrive here. Recent reports of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee and index.hu confirmed what we already knew (and we wrote about) from our regular visits to Debrecen: conditions in detention are also alarming, asylum-seekers are being beaten in the Debrecen detention center.
Now it's time to act!
On May 17, 2014 we will protest to end cruel detention (jail without charges) and inhumane treatment. Asylum seekers are vulnerable people who fled from their country fearing for their life and the safety of their family. Detaining them for not having legal travel documents contradicts basic human rights. How could we expect asylum seekers to integrate later as refugees in Hungary, if we lock them up and beat them when they arrive?
Join us in Debrecen to protest against detention, to show solidarity with those who are locked up, and to spend an afternoon together with refugees, asylum seekers, Hungarians and others.
Protest starts at the Debrecen Camp (see map) from 3 PM, information stand on rights of refugees and asylum seekers, a book stand, football,
tea and snacks already from 2 PM!
A bus will be rented and leave from Budapest Saturday May 17 morning. More details coming soon!
