http://www.maquilasolidarity.org 05.05.2001
maquilla solidarity network Maquila is the short form of the word maquiladora. It was originally associated with the process of milling. In Mexico it became the word for another kind of processing -- the assembly of imported component parts for reexport. The maquilas in Mexico began as a border phenomenon over 30 years ago. With the support of the Mexican government, US firms set up assembly plants on the Mexican side of the border. They were allowed to import components and raw materials duty-free and reexport the finished product to the US. Now maquilas are in many parts of Mexico and Central America. The lure of the maquilas is low wages, a lack of environmental or labour regulations, low taxes, and few if any duties. Products produced include apparel, electronic goods, autoparts, etc. Incl. kommentierter linkliste (en/ca)

Paper Tiger Television (PTTV) programs analyze and critique issues involving media, culture and politics. The shows feature scholars, community activists, critics and journalists addressing the ideological assumptions and the social meanings of the mainstream media as well as exploring the opportunities for alternative communications sources. Many programs examine a particular aspect of the communications industry, from print media to TV to movies, looking at its impact on public perception and opinion. Other videos represent the people and views which are largely absent from the mainstream media. The goal of the work is to provide viewers with a critical understanding of the communications industry. This critical consciousness is a necessary step towards more equitable and democratic control of information resources. (en)

Free Speech Internet Television Establishment media responds to the interests of stockholders and the perspectives of the advertizers who fill its pages, airtime and coffers. Freespeech.org attempts to respond to the interests of that majority of the people whose voices are excluded or distorted in the corporate media. The work of Free Speech Internet TV and other alternative media organizations at the World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle in December 1999 demonstrated how such voices can change the political terrain. Our commitment is to offer services. We host and promote. We are also building a community of premium websites that emphasize audio and video. We promote those sites that are the most interesting and engaging. Free Speech Internet TV, in collaboration with Free Speech Cable and the new Free Speech Digital Broadcast Satellite Channel, also provides an internet venue for producers and directors of progressive film, video and audio.
